How do you get most of your web design clients?

I have gotten one job only that went pretty well, for a catering service company, I got that job while working on the owners computer. How do you guys get your web design clients? are business cards effective? fliers? ads on craigslist & similar type sites? what is your most effective way on getting web design clients?

I get most of my web design clients by working on their computers first. The problem I have run into is people already having a website and wanting me to go in and make changes to it. I had much rather make a new site from the ground up.

Most of mine is word of mouth from current customers, i also host and with that i offer a larger maintinence package that is more in cost but i maintain their site for them. Takes me about 3 hours a week to maintain the 4 sites i have under that contract now.

Put together a nice document showing that you do web design work and maintenance. Give it to potential businesses. Also, show them some of your work. Even tho they may have a site it may actually not be very good. You can show them how you can fix it up. You can also see "does their site get any traffic/business" . They can have the greatest looking site around but if it's not coded right and they are not getting any business from it then it's pretty much useless.
