I recently went to a job site where a client bought 4 Windows 7 Keys from an online retailer ( not Ebay) they advertise Windows 7 for 29.00 each. After 4 months the keys were no longer genuine. When I got onsite I used a tool from my kit that gives me detailed information on each key. Well as you might of guessed, they were all MSDN keys which are Illegal to sell. The site is from China and did not respond to 3 emails. The client had to purchase 4 genuine Micrsoft kits for $109.00 each. They were less then impressed to say the least. I have found 5 of these sites so far all from China, ( Just google cheap windows 7 keys) I would love to know how these crooks stay in business, Needless to say I did report them to microsoft. Any onle else have any experience with these sites?

They eventually get taken down by MS in most cases, but as long as silly people think they can get hundreds of dollars worth of software for 1/5 the price, they'll keep cropping up. We just need to keep educating customers about how much software costs, and what to look out for with these dodgy sites.

There's your answer. IP theft in China is a big business, Communism is very localised in its approach to free markets, but will happily capitalize on what it can easily steal from markets that aren't. Their authorities have ne reason to change this as the win is entirely their way... at the moment.

I reported the website to Microsoft. Hopefully they will do something about it. I try to educate my clients regarding these scam sites. Most listen the ones who dont learn the hard way:(

Okay...

Have them do a credit card dispute, too, so they can get their money back by force from these crooks.

Thats a good question, I am not sure weather or not they can dispute it after 6 months. With these MSDN keys it usually takes 5-6 Months for Microsoft to pick up on it. I can literally find 11 websites selling windows 7 Ultimate for 29.00 lol. I guess its no different then Ebay.

They are showing up on Craigslist also and I'm constantly flagging them as 'prohibited'. One of the typical other software titles is Adobe CS5.

Here is one that showing up now:

I bought a computer off Craigslist the other day (she was recently blessed with a Mac). She had purchased it locally with windows 7 on it... the trial version - she had to contact Microsoft and purchase the software. Some people have no ethics at all.

I don't think you can dispute a charge that's 6 months old can you?

It depends on your credit card. When I ran a business I once saw a dispute from 2 years ago, yet the customer never even called me with a problem in the entire two years.

The point is they probably can. I know I would try to get the money back that way. It was total theaft.

I think the tool he is talking about is MGADiag.

It's a great tool - it will tell you the type of Windows product you have installed, as well as why the key is not genuine :)

Hi all,

No the tool I was reffering to is called Windows 7 PID Checker. It will give you alot of usefull information regarding your Windows 7 key. It is developed by a Russian Programer. I downloaded it for free at softpedia.com

It gives you your product ID, Activation ID. License type, License Channel, as well as the type of License (oem slp, Retail, MSDN) Its a fantastic tool.

Im, sure some of you know this, but to those who do not, here is an interesting fact. To check your PID go to system properties through the control panel, scroll down to activation section and look at the PID ( Product Identification Code) It will look something like this 12345-067-123-4567-54321, the portion you are interested in is the three digit section, if it matches or is within one or two digits of the examples below you probably have an MSDN key.

065, 066, 067, 068 for Ultimate, 220, 221 area for Pro and the 230, 231, 221, 232 area for premium, there are probably others but they should be close to those posted. Every MSDN key I have found has 232 within the PID key. I reported 4 more sites today as I emailed them first asking them if these were NOT MSDN keys and they all replied no. Within 12-24 I get the key all 4 Chinese websites sold me MSDN keys so 4 more to add to MIcrosoft list. I paid through paypal. So, with this tool I dont even need to activate it to tell if the key is a MSDN. Very Happy with it. And they have the audacity to call themselfs "Microsoft Ceritified Partners"

The same way the guy down the street gets away with the crack he's peddling (actually around here it's always oxycodone, but whatever). Regulation only matters when you're legit to begin with.

All caps, run on sentences, "softwares", "hit me up". Sounds real professional.

I know this is a old thread, but I have just had a laptop in, where the actual vhp, vhb part were missing.

The coa details are completely visable. After doing a quick check, I found a tool called Online PID checker.

http://d-fault.nl/PIDCheck.aspx

If you enter the coa details, it gives you all the details pertaining to the licence, ie what version of vista / 7 it is, if its oem etc.

Nice bit of kit, and another site to add to your arsenal.
