I installed Server 2012R2 using the CD that came with the Dell Poweredge T320 Server. Upon trying to activate I got errors saying that the key was invalid, which I assumed would happen because the Dell CD probably used some generic volume license key.
So I used all of the slui commands from an elevated command prompt to remove the key from the registry etc etc...
Now when I go to active it says there is no key, which is correct but when I put the key in from the sticker on the server, which is different from the key the Dell CD used I just get this generic error:
"This key didn't work, please check it and try again or try a different key"
When I try to force the key in using:
slmgr.vbs -ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
I get this error:
Error: 0xC004E016 On a computer running a non-core edition, run 'slui.exe 0x2a 0xC004E016' to display the error text.
After running that it says: the software licensing service reported that the product key is invalid.
But... it's the key on the sticker on the server ... I don't get it, help?!
