I have a client that has their website hosted by one company and email hosted by another. They have asked me to start hosting their email. Does anybody have any info to offer on how to go about hosting email without hosting the entire website? I host several small websites, I've just never tried to do one without the other. Thanks.

You have to make changes in the dns records i.e. mx records in order to do something like that. Really depends on what you are running in order to do this. If you just have a reseller hosting account of some time then I would not even deal with it.

I have a shared hosting reseller account mainly because I run several websites on my own. More or less I just have a couple of informational sites ne them that use very little of my bandwidth.

The company has about 30 email accounts that all access them using POP3. So nothing I would call extremely demanding.

If you're not familiar with hosting e-mail, I would suggest you don't do it... If you want to hear a client compain louder than you ever have, do something that affects their e-mail.

You should be calling your shared hosting reseller and seeing if they can help you set up e-mail for this client.

As someone else said, handling their e-mail is as simple as pointing their MX record to your mail server. You will also need to make sure the mail server's IP address has a PTR record, which most "Shared" hosting provider's servers will.

Is your client having problems with their current e-mail provider, or do they just like you?

Thanks for the info. Their current provider is phasing out all hosting services as it is not the core of their business.
