I have a Gateway E-4500D with brand new: 500gb SATA HDD, 4gb Memory, cd/dvd drive.

When I try to boot a dvd it will get to the: Press any key to boot from CD or DVD... and when I press a key nothing happens.

Cd's seem to boot fine but I can't get dvd's to boot.

I have tried to boot the following:

Windows XP CD - Boots
Ultimate Boot CD - Boots
PC Linux CD - Boots

Windows 7 Home Premium DVD - Won't Boot
Windows 7 AIO DVD - Won't Boot

I have checked all BIOS settings and checked all the jumper setting on the dvd drive. I also tried two other brand new dvd drives. any ideas?????

Maybe it's a DVD-R/+R/RW issue? Have you tried a different brand/type of DVD? Certainly sounds like a strange issue.

One of them was a Genuine Win 7 DVD so I dont think that is the issue. Right now I am installing xp and am going to try to upgrade

The weird thing is that if I install XP and while XP is running insert the Windows 7 install dvd it works fine and starts installing but when it restarts I just get a blinking courser after the motherboard splash screen and it just sits there.....

It appears that there is no Win 7 driver or something. Maybe Win 7 boot files are different and require something different in firmware? I dunno.

I've seen this a lot with Win2000/XP on old laptops where you cannot boot from an XP disk but can from an Win2000 one and so must install that first before XP.

However this doesn't help since you tried that.

Ok, I tried my pc-bsd DVD and it worked fine so it is not a drive problem. When I put my Win 7 dvd in and I get the "press any key...." message and I press a key it just stays on that screen

Got it! I went into the BIOS and disabled enhanced SATA and it worked perfect! thanks for all your help!
