Hard Drive price increases

Due to recent floods in Thailand, the Seagate and Western Digital factories have been flooded and production of drives have halted their. Many online shops have risen there prices quite high.

WD 2.5 250 GB SATA was about $46 or so, now it costs $80 on eBay. That is a massive increase

it looks like many are in for a long wait for the prices to return to normal

Are you just now finding this out? More current news tells us that prices should start to come down since some of the facilities in Thailand are coming back online. Now they plan on providing only a 1 Yr warranty on the drives.
I'm wondering how long that will last. They tried that before, saying that the systems usually come with only a 1 Yr warranty anyway. Of course, it won't make the drives any more reliable than they are now, just that they won't have to replace them with other bad drives.

On a side note, where are the cheapest drives at now, even if it's one per customer?

Fry's had 320 GB notebook drives for $60. I showed up and they were all sold out. I went on their site to get an email notification when they get back in stock. That was about 10 days ago. Still haven't heard from them. I suspect it's a ploy to get people to shop there. They probably had like 10 drives for sale as "loss leaders".

"Recent"..actually it was back about 5 months ago..or maybe 6 months? Sept or Oct 2011 if I recall. Prices have finished peaking, leveled out..and already starting a little drop back to reality.

The good part of this is...it brought down the price of SSD's...they've had to fill the void for a while.

Yes I've noticed that they have started to fall in price, slowly, but the prices are dropping.

$49.00 at Fry's -- HITACHI 320GB ULTRA DMA/100 7200RPM 8MB BUFFER LAPTOP HARD DRIVE. Still perpetually OUT OF STOCK at all stores!
