Good Bye, Logmein (Free)

I have quite a few clients who have free LogMeIn installed and they share their details with me so I can do various tasks after hours. This is where it's going to be a bit of a pain.

Dido, I'm looking into low cost solutions for my clients now. I'll keep you updated. I just sent a message to sales for splash top asking about their "User Grouping for shared access." Maybe it could be a solution.

Well, Crap! I don't do a ton of remote stuff, but those that I do are a real traveling time saver. I guess I'll have to figure out just how much it is worth now.

Thanks for the comments/recommendations. One thing I don't get about TV is that on their web site, they say: "Remote Support – no need for any installation on the client side". Never understood that, as you do - unless I'm missing something - need software on both machines.

You make a custom app which the client runs and then you connect. Once the job is done you close the app and as far as the customer is concerned it's gone. Still be in temp files.

I've been trying out Splashtop's free product (for personal use). Their business product is only $60 per year for unlimited computers, but only one user - which is fine for me.

Like Logmein, it requires a small client-side install.

Splashtop seems just fine for quick basic access and troubleshooting / user support. I don't do any "heavy lifting" repairs like virus removal remotely, so I have no thoughts on whether it would be good for that kind of thing.

For just $60 year, I think it would serve my simple needs.

I too have been using Splashtop. I use it at my full time job to login to co-worker's computers when they call me with problems. It does what I need it to. Like mraikes, I don't do any heavy stuff with it.

With the ACRBO discount on GFI, TakeControl is (almost) as cheap at LMI Central. Also, if you want to give your client remote access to their machines, you can enable the customer portal in GFI. There's a small fee you can pass along to your client, but what you get is TEAMVIEWER which no one really seems to dispute is the best product out there.

I have to admit this thread almost made me kick the dog and beat my wife. Then I read that Central users will not be impacted. Phew...

And my first thought was well, I'm signing up for central...

But then I saw that $299 only gets you 100 computers.

I've got between 30-40 'very-small-business' and home workers that use LMI Free. So, I'm using this to my advantage. Instead of them buying LMI Pro, they can pay me and I will provide the same or similar or better than LMI Free service at a lower cost. I have already sent out the email to everyone tonight. Don't look at it as a problem, look at it as an opportunity.

If you need to provide free support for a family member, you can still use the free version of TeamViewer.

So what solution will you provide them?

Earlier in the thread Julian mentioned he's using ScreenConnect.

This would be great but it's just not viable.
I could simply use LogMeIn Central and keep everyone on LogMeIn Free. It's already installed, they know it and I can assign users to computers so they only get access to the ones they need to.

Yeah, Central users won't be impaired.... At least until time to renew comes along.

I'm currently looking into screenconnect. When logmein.com "free and always will be" was tied to logmein Central "manage pro and free computers" were tied together at $300 / year, I was all good.

Central users ARE impaired however. Anyone running a full time repair shop will be presented with a $1,500 / year bill the next time their subscription comes up.

Good to know I actually made the mistake of investing time into installation, as well as investing time into the customer impression of logmein just to find out I have to use logmein to install another remote support software.

But hey, we knew it was coming. Anybody enabling the scammers claiming to be whatever tech company you were actually trying to call; hey, they're probably not on the user's side anyway.

Yes Techinline is quite good. I use it 5 sessions at a time. I'm quite interested in Splashtop now that it has been mentioned.

$60 a year seems quite reasonable. I would like to know more about it's limitations though.

Anyone here that uses it frequently?

Regards,

Please elaborate on the $1,500 a year bill. I'm thinking about paying for central but am worried about what will happen after the first year.

I was using Teamviewer as an alternative to LMI, but may have to give Splashtop a shot for certain applications

Jump Desktop?

Anyone tried Jump Desktop? I am looking for a solution for an OS X mac based client I have. They have an OS X Mountain Lion server, 6 iMacs and a Macbook I need to support. That is all I was using logmein free for. I do all my other remote support with GFI Max Takecontrol version of Teamviewer. Unfortunately they do not have mac support within Takecontrol.

Yesterday I tried to remote in to this client using the VPN I configured for them a while back on their OS X Server and using RealVNC viewer from my Windows Desktop. The VPN connects fine, but the VNC viewer is just too slow and keeps dropping the connection for some reason.

My daughter has latched onto my Macbook Air and I plan to borrow it back when I can to see if remote access may be any better from a OSX device.

If I can't get one of these to work, I am probably going to purchase a Teamviewer license which I hate to do since My Takecontrol monthly charge is starting to add up.
