We wouldn't expect it now would we... but Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is perfect. It was released yesterday (29th September) - it is a better attempt in replacing Micrsoft OneCare which was quite an expensive piece of software. I've been using it to replace my poor old friend AVG, and it my computer seems to be working even more efficient. MSE is an all in one free security package. Scanning is also fast, and from comparing with full scans from AVG it's quicker and gives out even better results! I've read many reviews on this, and their all brilliant, I've always used Windows Firewall, so now with everything Microsoft-related my computer feels like it is all in 'one'.

My impressions of MSE are quite good as I have experienced no stability or compatibility issues with it. The program itself is extremely light-weight and no performance hit has been observed during its use. Even while it scans the computer is still more than usable. The program runs completely silent as well without popping up any annoying windows about things that I don't need to know about like some other security programs (and OneCare) do. I believe that anyone that is running a genuine copy of Windows, especially Vista or 7, should get this. MSE is a very good anti-virus/spyware solution that works effortlessly and won't cost you a penny.

It's hard to trust Microsoft after the failure of Vista, but with Windows 7 and MSE they have seriously upped their game this year.

Just downloaded it, I'll be trying it this week. I'm glad to hear its light weight. If this is true it would be the first Microsoft product that is. As for its effectiveness, I think only time will tell.

I'll wait to see how it's detection rates are before I even think about it...

NickCat11 come on thats what VMs are for build install run test and watch it explode. We can make almost anything break just not as good as our customers/clients it would seem. I will consider droppin this into a VM sometime but I need to do much work on my home systems I will hold off and wait for reviews instead myself.

lol, you're right, what was I thinking. I'll get right on it and let you know how long it lasts... ;)

Virtual machine, fresh install of xp with sp3. Install MSE.

Go here: http://www.malwaredomainlist.com/mdl.php

Download and run/try the various malware thats out there right now. Build up a good set of results.

Next, repeat with Vista.

After that Infect a machine first and see if you can get MSE installed and if you can, see if it can remove the malware after the install.

Everyone should join in and show some results. Do a test against AVG or Avira or even Avast in another VM. See which does better. I will be doing my testing tomorrow afternoon.

Forget all that - Cyberdefender has worked amazingly well for the last 8 months or so that I've used it! I stand by it's ability to block out virus attacks

I may toss this into VM sometime soon but I certainly will follow this thread to see what the general consensus is, I prefer Avira and don't think this app will be able to change that.

The only thing I don't like about Avira free is that it doesn't have email scanning.

Well the good part is in comparison to say McAfee or Norton Avira is cheaper and superior so if that is required at least the cost isn't as high.

Fellers,

It's still MS:

You get tied up in their WGA crapola

The update is through Windows update and I trust everyone here knows how fickle that is....

They're still big fans of the "unknown error" description

The settings are written by MS, which means they are basically impenetrable and unnecessarily difficult

Yeah but if anyone is capable of buying another firm's decent product and marketing it as their own, it's Microsoft. So it could be OK.

I've been using this for around 2 weeks now, it's great, i especially like the little 'Clean computer' button which appears in the bottom right corner when it detects something bad, it's extremely user-friendly for novice users

I was one of the lucky people the get it when the had the very short beta and I have been using it since then. The pop-up prompts are as user friendly as you can get, I never notice it updating but it is always up to date when I check, and it runs very smoothly with little error and little resources. However if you do a system scan, do it before you go to bed. I have never seen a antivirus/antispyware program take so long. It takes HOURS. However that doesnt mean that is a bad thing. That is my thoughts on it.

With AVG going on Version 9.0 and it is still bad...MSE sounds like the best free choice.

I agree, ive been running it a week on a test box, not throwing viruses at it, but using it to get the feel, and it is definately user friendly. Ive already had issues twice playing around with avg 9.0, had update issues on a win 7 cpu that was a clean install, and on an xp box, 9.0 was really slow....i liked avg for customers as a free solution, but I'm not ready yet to put 9.0 on a customer computer just yet.

After doing some brief research on AVG 9.0 it still looks like they need to work some kinks out. A lot of people are having many issues with it.

I have been using it since it's public release, and so far it's good. I even installed it on a few of my beta testers (Family PC's that get fixed for free :) ) and they seem to like it also. The real test will be my brother in law, he loves P2P and I'm sure he bound to download something nasty soon!
