Hey guys, sorry for the silence of late. Yes I have been shut down by my host for exceeding their "Everything Unlimited" plan. Guess I don't blame them. I had more than 500 simultaneous connections on more than one occasion. Brought their server to its knees. Never anticipated such a thing from a hobby site. They offered a dedicated server to handle the load for 1500/yr. I wasn't prepared to pay that for a hobby site. I queried other hosts with the truth of the situation and they too have the same imposed limits and dedicated server plans, yet they advertise unlimited as well. I guess it's an industry standard. Never dreamt I would be in this situation.
Quite honestly, I was going to just pull the plug. I started this site many years ago as my own personal reference collection. I figured me and a few of my peers would be its only viewers. Soon all the nice emails started coming in from other Geeks and wanna be geeks. I felt proud I was helping some people organize the myriad of information out there. I freely shared all my information and my toolkit with anyone who wanted access. Then the negative emails started about everything from fonts, iframes, and color choices to even my site name. They were starting to take the fun out of it for me. So when the site went down I figured it was for the best. No one appreciated it anyway. Then there was this flood of people that really expressed concern about my site being down and wanted to help. That was an incredible feeling. Wasn't sure what I was going to do though.
Then someone from this board contacted me yesterday who is willing to host my site in his data center. I was overwhelmed with his offer. So we are trying to get it set up and we'll see how it goes. Of course I'll mention his name once everything is in place and working and give him full credit. It's an amazing offer of generosity and even if for some reason it doesn't work out I still want to say thank you now for the offer.
For you guys here reading this, the IT Pros, I don't see you relying on a site such as mine. But there are a lot of geeks coming up through the ranks, as we did, trying to organize or make sense of all the information floating all around them. It makes them dizzy at times and I can relate. I just try and bring some targeted organization to all the topics out there. From some of the emails I've received, it's helped make sense of it all for them. Those are the emails that make me feel obligated to keep the site going.
Anyway, I apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused for some of you. It's been a big inconvenience/hassle for me as well. But I still love IT and always will. It's my passion.
Thanks guys for the time.
