So last week I had my first experience with Geekatoo and thought I would share.

I applied to them a month ago, and got approved 5 minutes before they sent the job to me. I was a little put off by that.

They sent me a text with the problem, and the pay rate, which was more than I would have expected. The job was a simple one though, took less than 15 minutes to fix it. Also sold the 3 licenses of kaspersky while there.

The customer called in the job as complete before I got back to the shop. The money is in my account today, so 5 business days. Not as fast as their website claims, but faster than I have heard about other companies, and nothing to complain about.

I doubt I will get a lot of business off them, but one or two here and there is good since it costs me nothing.

So I am happy with them off this first experience. What experiences have you had with them, or other companies?

I am with Work Market but haven't really taken any jobs lately. I took a job to install 3 printers. I got to the site, check in, check in with the poc onsite and he says there's a delay, 2 hours, while we wait for something else to be installed. I was only being paid for each printer I install. It ultimately was a 7 hour job and about 5 hours of just waiting, sitting there, doing nothing. The rest was installing the printers and contacting their help desk to have them login remotely to the system and do the rest. It left a really bad taste in my mouth and I tried to talk to them about it (the vendor who hired me) and they wouldn't budge. I gave up after that.

Looked into it. Looks decent. Can I mark you down as a referral?

I signed up a while ago and recently tried to delete my account but they don't seem to make that an option. I just flagged their emails as spam so they don't come to my inbox anymore.

My experiences & thoughts:

- You're pretty much only going to get residentials, and low-end, bargain-basement residential clients at that. Think about it; these are people who aren't even asking for a good referral from a friend; they're searching the internet for the "cheapest geek" they can find. Not a good start.

- One job I "got" and got in touch with the client, they were in a very shady part of town and when I called prior to leaving for the meeting to confirm as I always do, they said "oh we already found somebody else" or something to that effect, even though I was extremely prompt in accepting the job, contacting the client, etc.

- Most of the jobs that I've received emails about from Geekatoo have been really far away; 10+ miles; and total garbage work - literally stuff like "Need help hooking up a DVR" and other crap like that.

Good if others find it useful, for me it couldn't possibly be a bigger waste of time.

It's the equivalent of going to a strip club, only to find it's really a colonoscopy clinic. Not what I was looking for, nor what I want to spend my time doing.

As i can read... is it something like we used to have with Nexicore ?

No. From what I see it's more along the lines of Thumbtack or Craig's List. I've not seen anything yet.

So, while typing this, I thought I would login to see if there was anything. Surprise, surprise!!! Even though I got an email saying my account had been approved on 5/23 they want me to complete the application again. That was with FF. So I tried with Safari and it logged in fine. But shows no jobs available.

I've done some jobs for Geekatoo. Although my rate is higher than what they pay me, it's still a good referral. Basically it's your client for life unless you mess up. If you don't like the client, then don't give them your personal info. Give them Geekatoo phone number instead. Nice way to weed out unwanted clients.

all referral services suck so far in my experience. Like others I've had the same issue, bottom barrel bargain hunters like thumbtack. I liked thumbtack at first but the rates to just *send* a quote is like 3$ in my area, that's insane. Maybe $1.50 if they see my quote and $1.50 if they put in thumbtack that they picked me. I know there is no way thumbtack will know that or not but still so far it has seemed to be tire kicker central.

You think that's bad?

We have a similar service here in Australia called one flare.

You put in all your details, and when people find their site, they can ask for a quote from 5 vendors.

I got $30 credit with them for filling out a complete profile, so I thought I'd give it a go.

Get this : it costs $8-$12 to quote! Just to QUOTE. You get the customers details at this point. Twice I've tried it, first time I had no answer, second the guy had already found someone else. Never again. And it's always stupid job descriptions from num nuts like "computer needs fixing" or "broken screen" or "need help"

Insane.

Yeah, no thanks, learning SEO is free and I'm #1 for <my town> iphone repair, computer repair, ipad repair and I dont pay for that at all.

Well I have had 1 "bad" experience, 1 good, and 1 excellent with Geekatoo. I do dislike the set prices as when the job gets complicated or is further than their as the crow flies mileage it is tough to make up the difference.

The "bad" job
The job wasn't bad just got complicated it was a Home Theater speaker wiring job. I ended up getting my fish caught in the wall had to hack it and drill a new hole to finish fishing the wires. This took 3 trips and was 25 miles there and 35 miles back due to a road being out instead of the 18 miles they said. The job ended up taking about 5 hours too and the pay was $180 that isn't enough but the client was nice and happy with the work.

The good job
Simple PC Tuneup/Cleanup and a NIC install pay was I think $120 only down side was it was about 30 miles out instead of the 24 miles they said. But job went smooth so no real complaints

The excellent job
Rich client had issues with WiFi that GeekSquad had "fixed" previously. Wanted immediate service so paid for a priority which is always nice. Find they have 2, or maybe 3, WiFi routers but none broadcasting. Geeksquad had installed a repeater, house too big, which was working for a while. Turns out that Geek Squad setup the repeater to repeater a nieghbors WiFi. So replaced their rented cable modem+wifi combo with a good DOCSIS 3.0 modem and N WiFi router then reconfigured the repeater to work on their WiFi. Tested signal strength and the new N router was almost enough to cover the whole house.

My experience so far with Geekatoo is fair to pretty good, and I say that in comparison to the other referral services with which I have worked, including Thumbtack, Angie's List, Computer Assistant, etc. I signed on with them as they were just getting off the ground, and I didn't get any referrals for a long time. However, in the last 6 months, I've completed 2 jobs & have another one scheduled for tomorrow. My thoughts:

* The price per job is a little bit lower than what I would charge, but not pizza tech prices.
* They pay quickly - next business day - direct deposit into my back account, which is helpful.
* The process of working through the appointment is pretty painless - you just post updates to their website (e.g. client contacted, when the appointment is scheduled, etc.) None of this calling the referral service immediately before & after the appointment junk or filling out special forms like you have to do with some of the other referral services.
* I look at Geekatoo as one avenue for lead generation. I give these customers the same info. & sales pitch that I would give to any new customer, and I expect that they would call me again if they have a computer issue.

My 2¢.

Before I start, I would like to say that I have an account with many different work markets, such as Onforce, Field Nation, Field Solutions, and Work Market. Although I don't always like their pay rates, I do take jobs periodically and have always received positive ratings through them all. I've only had one really bad experience through Work Market, and that was a client who wouldn't pay. However, they finally paid, only after Work Market received so many complaints that they finally suspended their account. One thing I like about Field Nation now is the fact they will post your ratings to you Facebook if you want them to.

As far as Geekatoo goes...I will probably never work with them again. My first experience with them will probably be my last, and I have even told them this. I just wish I would have listened to my gut instinct, my wife, and several of the reviews I had read, before taking one of their jobs. As a matter of fact, I may not even get paid for the work I have performed after this review, but it is well worth it if it saves some of my fellow techs a headache like I experienced.

Thursday of last week, I received a text from a number that I didn't recognize: "Hi, I'm from Geekatoo. A client...Can you help?". The texting kind of gave me a bad feeling to begin with.

We finally agree on a different date than the customer originally wanted. Before leaving Tuesday morning, I call the client to confirm he would be there and received his voice mail, so I left a message and headed to his home. On the way, I stopped to call him again and received his voice mail again. I finally arrived on site, rang the doorbell, and identified myself. I was then told that the laptop needing service had been stuck in repair mode after he tried to boot it up just before I showed up. I explained that I would allow it to try and finish booting while I worked on his virus issue with his desktop. Although the desktop had 8 Gig of ram, it was so slow that I finally decided to run crystaldiskinfo in safe mode to see if the drive might be failing. While the desktop was rebooting, I check the laptop (approximately 30 minutes later) and it is still stuck in repair mode. I manually powered it off, booted it with a thumb drive and began a HDD check and went back to the desktop. After running crystaldiskinfo, I noticed several errors with the drive and explained it to the customer that my performing a virus removal on it may cause the drive to totally fail. He wanted the virus removal done anyways, so I did what he asked. After about another hour, I checked on the laptop and seen the drive was ok. I then rebooted the laptop and went into repair mode and ran a chkdsk. While the chkdsk was running, I continued performing the virus removal and had the customer test it out once I was finished. He was satisfied with the removal but kept asking why it was still so slow, so I had to begin explaining to him that it was more than likely the HDD issues I had told him about earlier. The only thing I couldn't do that I normally do during any virus removal is delete the temporary files from the user's profile. However, it was going so slow that I told him he would have to call me when it finished and that he could still use the computer while it ran in the background. Before leaving, I checked on the laptop, which was still running the chkdsk and repairing allot of issues. I instructed him to call me later, as it wasn't even a quarter of the way through due, to all of the errors it was fixing and the fact that I had tried to call Geekatoo's technician technical support twice during the time I was there and received voice mail both times, after being placed on hold for 15 minutes each time.

Later that evening, I get a call from the client saying the computer had finished performing the chkdsk. I instructed him of what to do and the computer booted fine, but he could not access any of his pictures. I had him explain to me everything and came to the conclusion that he had the cryptolocker and his files had been encrypted. Of course, he went on to say that the computer was fine before I arrived and the only issue they had with it was losing internet connection!

During two whole days, I continuously try to get technical support at Geekatoo, only to be sent to voice mail every time after being on hold for more that 15 minutes each time. After each call, I would get someone on their chat option and be given an answer of someone will call you but there is no guaranteed time.

Two days later, I finally get a text message telling me that the customer wanted a new technician and that I did not complete the job! After several texts back and forth and explaining all I wanted was to talk to a live person in tech support, I finally get a response of "This form of communication isn't working quite well, we'll have someone give you a call." I responded with "I've been trying to get someone to call me since I was on site yesterday.

Alex, from tech support, finally called me and I explained everything to him, including my getting the run-a-round with getting tech support for well over 30 hours. Of course, he apologized and told me that I would get paid for the virus removal and that he would call me the first thing this morning. Of course, that never happened as well. I called in twice today got nowhere, other that he was extremely busy and it's hectic around here today.

Of course they sent me an email confirming they would be paying me for the virus removal, since they finally confirmed that I did complete the job, but that I would not get paid anything regarding the laptop.

My take on Geekatoo is this: They lie to their customers when they say "We have thousands of Geeks across the country ready and waiting to help you. Every Geek must pass a background check, and to ensure that you’re getting the best support possible, we verify our Geek’s credentials by reviewing pertinent information such as education, employment history, and professional certifications.", as non of this was ever performed on me. I was approved immediately after signing up! If you run into a problem on site, you will be ignored indefinitely, as they are extremely understaffed and only worried about new sales.
