As an ex-web dev (I think ive mentioned this a few times in TN articles). All of these are very good advice. However, I registered and hosted my clients sites so I could:
a) provide a "complete package" instead of going "heres a site, go find somewhere to host it"
b) extra income

I understand this writers issue of the clients asking for help day and night. However, my clients rarely did anything like that, and if it was anything beyond a problem on my end (such as a server down).. I'd charge for it.

Very good article. Only thing I disagree with is:

"Can you show me a mock-up to help us choose a designer/developer? No"

To that one I say "yes". I guess it depends on your work if you are confident enough to do that. I do it and maybe once have had to drastically change it. Well worth the effort.

While I'm not a web-dev myself, I'm just getting into setting up web servers. Is it at all worth me considering hosting websites for businesses?

Bryce i want to thank you for that advice, I read it in an earlier article.
Just had my first web design project, and now i Include full package, including monthly fee for support, and update to the site, guarantee 72 hours response time to update. As I could do it on spare time real quick if there is any.

Now i got steady income for the next five years contract with them. Am happy with it.

What kind of monthly fee have you charged for support SandTech?

As a host, I recommend that you charge more than most online webhosts. Places like Godaddy charge like $3.95 per month and it just wont be worth your while. I recommend around the $15 mark.

Also, I REALLY recommend something like Hostgator for your servers, they have awsome uptime which means you dont have your clients harrassing you. Also, everything is preinstalled. You have licences to use CPanels, its a few clicks to setup a new client/domain (rather than going into httpd.conf) etc..

Very correct. Use an established host with built in support for reselling. One that has a better system than CPanel would make me happy, but cpanel works good enough so hostgator might be good.

SandTech: We charge basically the same for the web clients we have. Good job on specifying the 72 hours, without it your clients think they own you.

Well he's happy with pricing, and already called me today to meet a friend of him to do a site for them also.

Not bad :)
