While you will wanna get inventory software, I personally don't use invoicing software. I simply use an old Word 97 memo template which I lightly modified and use in excel. But mostly I just print out blanks from that template and use them on-site.

P.S. Yes, I said word 97. :)

Man...that gives me a headache just thinking about doing that with any kind of volume. If you intend to grow your business at all, I suggest looking into something that manages a database of customers and invoices. Even something like Quickbooks Simple start (Free Edition) might work.

My advice, stay away from the free stuff if you are serious about your business.
If you are just goofing around then use the free stuff.

I started out using the free stuff but realized the it was not dependable and you can't hold any body accountable when it goes down or the software is not working like it should.

I've been using QB online version, I like it.. it's easy fast and secure.

I agree with anth. If you are running a serious business, then you need to plan on going with a solid application that properly tracks customer contacts, sales, and inventory.

Since I have a shop, I decided to go with a Point of Sale system that included Kitting (great for managing inventory used in custom builds), Order tracking, and Service tracking. The service tracking feature has come in handy on several occasions to prove that something was done. I had a customer come in and claim that he had his computer in 2 weeks earlier and it's not working now...when I looked up his record, it was 5 months earlier. Big difference. I had another customer that claimed that I did work without approval. So, I brought up the customer contact log (which is timestamped) and showed my notes from that conversation.
