We just started some Facebook advertising. Our market is more residential break-fix. We are staring with about a 1,200/month budget. Any of you seasoned facebook advertisers have any suggestions?

Good luck with that. I wouldn't expect many direct conversions from it. I assume you have other advertising in place to go with it or great SEO so that you are easy to find? I don't know anyone that would search Facebook for a service. That is what Google is for. But FB can build name recognition like Radio and TVs use to do. Which will put more weight on your name when they find you online.

We do have good SEO. We come up organically at the top. I think what is most important is we are seen in the google local listings. I think the local listings defaults by distance. We have done TV in the past and I think it did help. If it just keeps us top of mind, it might pay off. Now I am not feeling as good about it. As to Google, we are doing adwords express, since I thought maybe it would do better with the current blocking of computer repair but I don't think it is making a difference.

that is what we are hoping for. We are also trying to push more MacBook repair and may run ads that mention we fix liquid damaged macs at a better price than apple

Honestly, on FB it is less about running ads about what you do and running content that people want to view and share, that also has your name plastered all over it. Nobody cares that you fix macbooks until their macbook is broken. Think about the totally stupid stuff you click on FB that isn't about your relatives and build your ad to look like THAT.

Facebook advertising shouldnt be looked at stand alone. When you say "It didnt work for me" there are so many variables.

Are you targeting people who are likely to convert?
Was your offer good?
Was your messaging for that offer good?
Was your image eye catching?

And if you did get a bunch of clicks from it:

What the traffic directed to a landing page for that ad or did you just land them on the front page?
Was the sales copy on the page good?
Did it have a call to action?
etc...

Any one of these can be the weak link and break the entire chain resulting in Facebook ads "not working".

Facebook advertising sucks because it's not DIRECT advertising. The only kind of advertising that really works well is the type of advertising that comes up when people are looking for YOU. Even an ad in the phone book is better than Facebook because people are actually LOOKING for your service when they look at your ad in the phone book. With Facebook it's just poke 'n hope. This is why Google banning computer repair ads should be against the law. Google needs to be reclassified as a public service because it's what EVERYONE uses to find information. Google banning stuff is akin to making certain books illegal. We don't live in China. Google shouldn't be able to pick and choose what businesses they allow to be found.

You will have better luck putting $20 bills around town with your number on it.

People on Facebook aren't going there because they are looking for a service they want to see what Becky had for dinner.

I started some tests with different audiences to compare to my original test to everyone within a 40-mile radius. I made two new audiences. One was for all people in a 40-mile radius who have shown interest or liked MacBooks. The second audience was everyone in a 40-mile radius interested in graphic design or photography. It will be interesting to see if we get different results.

If you want to target certain people you can even upload a list of names to Facebook. That makes me think. If I could get a list of all of the people in my area with MacBooks I could just show them ads. This is kind of fun when you think of all of the possibilities.

The crazy thing is those two ads, which have run for about 12 hours, are doing horrible, at least the click rate is less than half of the broad audience. I was expecting them to easily double or triple the number of clicks per impression.

You are getting a 50% click rate? That is not horrible at all. Most any advertising only does at best 5%.

I am getting a 50% lower click rate when trying what I thought was a more optimized audience as opposed to my already low click rate of the broadest possible audience(everyone in a 40-mile radius). I was maybe getting 1% now it is about half that.
