Excel opens desired file and a blank as well

This is annoying. On an HP probook 4530s running win7 home premium with Office 2007, opening an excel file by navigating to the folder and double-clicking the file, Excel opens the file, but also opens a blank Excel spreadsheet. Opening the file from within Excel does not produce this issue. I have checked most of the settings/options within excel, but don't see anything that would cause this.

I am stumped here. Any ideas?

Possibly has an autoopen or autoexec macro running that is messing with it.

I would also redo the file associations for excel documents as the command listed for opening those files may have extra stuff in it causing this.

+1. Could be a hack/virus/whatever.

Ive had this same problem when I downloaded a template. Havent really worked on finding out why this is happening yet. Id be curious to see what you find the problem to be. I imagine it would have to do with a macro also.

So I have checked out the machine and found no evidence of any virus/malware. All the shortcuts properties are in order and I also couldn't find any evil macros. The office repair tool came up empty as well - no problems found.

Oddly, this seems to only happen the first time excel is run, and only if I open a file from within explorer, not from within excel itself. So on a fresh boot, navigating to the excel document (any excel document) and double clicking to open it, yields the document and a separate excel window, but blank. Closing excel and then opening the same document the same way, all is good.

Still stumped:confused:

Yea, I found that 'solution' as well. And like the others on that page, it didn't work for me. Frustration continues.

Jaydee, I hadn't seen that thread, so thanks for the heads up. But at first glance it looks like they may not be exactly along the lines I need. I can open docs just fine, and have no .lnk issues, its just that Excel (and Word I have just noticed) open both the file I select and another blank document.

I will dig into your links and let you know though. Thanks!
