Error 1516: "Partition improperly dismounted

I am getting this error on a customers hard drive. The customer brought it in because widnows stayed in a restart loop. Using partition magic I see that the drive letter is "*.*" with no actual drive letter. I am not able to run chkdsk /f because there is no drive letter.

Anyone know a fix for Error 1516: "Partition improperly dismounted" ?

Here's a page with a bunch of folks with the same problem - solution seems to be using Acronis (they mention Partition Expert, but I believe the tools are now part of Disk Director Suite - which I just purchased, yay!):

1516 Error thread

Also, check the last post in the thread - recommends setting the bad drive as a slave in a working machine and running chkdisk or other from there.

I hope that helps!

I tried chkdsk and ran it 4 times that did not solve the issue. When I went to go assign drive letters the drive had a drive letter assigned even though it shows in partition magic as "*.*" .

I was able to solve the issue by doing a repair on the windows xp home install.
