Error 0x000006ba When running SFC

This one is bugging me. Got a laptop running XP that I'm trying to run SFC on. When I run it, I get an error 0x000006ba, RPC server not started. I check the services, and it is in fact running. I tried doing a 'net start rpcss' anyways, of course it says that it's already been started.

So, heading into the registry to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SFCDisabled to set the value to '0', but it's already at '0'. I've done some google searching and I've tried about all I can.

At a glance, I can't see anything suspicious running on the computer. MBAM comes back clean, as well as GMER. I haven't tried Combofix yet, maybe I'll do that now.

But anyone else run into this before? I've been staring at this for hours and I'm at a loss. Maybe I just need a break from it to clear my mind. Anyways, any help appreciated.

have you looked at the System event log? Any other errors that occur during start up or in response to the attempted SFC?

I have had this before and as I remember it, some other service had failed to start on startup.

Why are you running SFC? - what is the problem you are trying to solve there, maybe it's related?

I've glanced at the log, but I could go over it again a little closer. The problem is that programs are randomly hanging in normal mode. The original problem noted by the customer was that his internal intel wireless had stopped working. He has since started using a USB wireless card with no problems. But when he runs his AV (yuk, mcaffee), it constantly stops on the same file in his intel wireless folder. Then it just freezes there. I've removed all of the intel drivers, and related software. Programs function as well as can be expected in safe mode. It's just in normal mode, they all hang. Process explorer doesn't show any abnormal processes running either. Sometimes the system hangs on the welcome screen as well.

Also MS Mem Diag ran overnight without errors.

I am an idiot. I looked at the SMART codes yesterday and, although there were a couple errors, I didn't feel they were very severe. However, after reading through the event logs, it became quite clear what the problem was. I've used Hirens to map out the bad sectors, and will now make an image of the drive. I still don't know if this fixed the sfc issue, but even after just mapping out the bad sectors, the hangs are now gone. *sigh*

That's what I get, I suppose. Time to order a new HD for him.

Funnily enough I posted about bad sectors but it never made it. What you were saying about the AV stalling on certain files sounded like a corrupt file system or bad sectors.

And that was my original thought when the guy first came in to question me about it. I found 4 bad sectors on the drive when checking it today. It's just how the system behaved in safe mode which led me away from my original diagnosis. Never second guess yourself, I guess......
