Erratic Laptop Behavor!

I was working on my dell 9400 today and a strange message came up. It said something about a virus. Well as any good user does, i just clicked yes to what ever that message was.

Every since then its been acting strange, the hdd keeps making a strange sound like a hickup!

The monitor gets these drip like streams going. I have to wipe it every 10 minutes to keep things readable. The keyboard has white dots all over it now as well.

In general the system just runs like it is congested.

i'm thinking it has strep throat. My sister was over last week and now her and all the kids have it as well.

Have you run a virus scan of your computer?

Was this virus message you recieved from the anti-virus program you have installed on the computer? If its not or you don't know you can assume that it was a virus itself.

I'd suggest you also run Malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/

sounds like you got hit by antivirus2009/360/-1, etc...

1. Disable System Restore
2. Run CCleaner - http://www.ccleaner.com/
Under the “Windows” Tab, check every option except the following
• “Memory Dumps”
• “Windows Log Files”
• “Old Prefetch Data”
• “Hotfix Uninstaller”

Run the Registry Scanner and delete any problems found

Check the Startup services and disable all unnecessary startup programs
3. Run MBAM (Malwarebyte’s Anti-Malware) – reboot if required
if a reboot is required, run MBAM again! Repeat until no reboot is required.

4. Run Dial-a-Fix to repair Windows services - http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix
5. Run HijackThis and check log at: http://www.hijackthis.de/
6. Run CCleaner again following step 2

9. Run a quick virus scan

Well normally I wouldn't touch anything with white dots all over the keyboard... but that's just me. As we all know most computers get better with time as they fix themselves, and most virus's are incurable anyway. Your best bet would be to disconnect it from the world, put it in a loose fitting bag as well as making sure it's comfortable. Attach a small trickle charger to keep it nourished, but if it won't accept a charge don't force it as having a virus causes a lot of stress on software and hardware, and you really don't want to lose your data as well right now. Hopefully in a week or two all will be ok, if not I hope you have insurance.

I did all those things you said. The dots are turning purple now. I'm nearly out of Kleenex as well. Maybe its allergic to penicillin as well

How should i know? That damn thing is in the kitchen wall somewhere, but i do hear him make noise every night just before i get to sleep =\
