So im now registered as a limited company but im not active. Last night I registered on a ton of business directories for seo and google places benefits and since then I bet I have received about 30 calls since 9am its now 11am. I tell them im not interested and they try and go on about how its not changing anything and not changing your provider etc its just getting business rates. Again i tell them im not interested and they go on and on and on and on one in particular wont stop calling me and asking to speak to me then I tell them to go away politely and they ask for the home owner (my mother) who unfortunately wont tell them as quickly and ends up listening to them for ages.

My questions are how can I get them to stop calling me? is there anything i can say to them on the phone such as laws etc (live in UK) and do I actually have to change to business energy plans if im registered at home as im quite happy to pay the extra for residential power as my mother is still looking for a job after moving back from australia a couple of months ago and it is me that is trying to get something sorted not her.

Thanks.

Register with the TPS.

This stops any cold callers from contacting you. You do not need to change any plans, energy wise etc, if you do not want too. All they are attempting to do, is to get some money out of you.

Also you can request that your details be kept off their calling register.

Is it a business line or home line?

If it is only a home line sign up for the TPS and give it a few days to take effect, after this if they call you for a sales call tell them they are braking the law and report them on the TPS website.

If you have registered or even mentioned the number as a business then it's fair game as far as I know, but I could be wrong.

thanks all i have added it to TPS as both a home line and a limited company line. Im getting sick of it and its very annoying having it ring all of the time.

This thing of being 'polite' to phone canvassers is an interesting one. For years I have been meticulously courteous to anyone canvassing either by phone or door-to-door, figuring they are just trying to make a living like everyone else, and being concerned that they probably have to deal with impolite people all day, and so making the effort myself.

And then I got a business phone and started getting real, continuous, consistent annoyance and harrassment.

And did a 360.

Now they get enough rope to make it apparent its an unsolicited phone call or door knock. They get a "no thanks" and the door is shut, or the phone hung up. No conversation. Not one word further. Not one second more time.

I figure its not my fault they have chosen a profession that relies on pestering and annoying people, and so I no longer feel obligated to persevere with social niceties.

Its a sign of the times I think.

Years ago, you would get one of these once in awhile, and it was easy to be patient. It was just an occasional interruption, after all.

Now they're in your face all the time, day after day, week after week, and common courtesy is the first casualty as a result.

Or maybe its always been like this and I am just grumpy now that I am older? :)

Dunno. Funny how things change though.

Hopefully, you have things sorted now. But, really, they have no standing to make requests or demands, and you don't have to put up with this. A simple "no, thank you" followed by hanging up is the quickest way to deal with these guys. Don't wait for them to end the call, and don't put your mother on the phone!

Thanks for the info. The company that is harassing me didnt give me their name but it went something like this.

Call 1> Mother answers explains im busy and they will need to speak to me.

Call 2> I answer and I explain I'm not interested at all and they then go on how they are not changing anything and its with my same provider etc. They then ask me some questions so I go along with it thinking they will gtfo. They then tell me im with xyz provider and that ive been with them since 09 I explain ive only been in this house like a month and they go on how im not registered and need to be etc etc etc. I tell them again that I dont care how much I save im not interested. He then says we will call you when something comes up. I hangup.

Call 3 (most annoying)> They ring again and say how ive requested a call back etc and how im not registered and im listed as a business and can save 30% and lots of other stuff e.g. how I dont need to change providers. I tell him like 10 times I am not interested but he keeps going on and on and on and then I say 'its not my house anyway and the owner is not interested' so he tells me he will call back for my mother later.

Im waiting for call 4 and I seriously feel like telling them where to stick it. If its for business rates I fail to see how my mother can help them anyway as it is my business not hers.
