Domain names

I was wondering how many domain names other people have and their thoughts on whether or not they made good decisions on domain names. Why did you choose the domain name and the tld?

I only have one and it is basically my business name. It isn't really ideal for the purposes of SEO. I have been thinking about getting another which will use my keywords and point it to my current website. Would this actually be of any benefit?

I find that merely because google says it is bad does not make it so. Just my opinion though.

Google is not exactly the type of business I want to get into a pissing match with, considering they own 67% of the search engine market share, plus a MAJOR market share in advertisements. If they say they do not agree with something you are doing and find your website is against their guidelines they can completely remove your page from research results.

I own every combination I could get of my name and they all forward to my main domain. I don't know if this hurst SEO or not, but I figue if I own them I might as well have them pointed to something. Now as far as other non name related names I do not have any.

I'm the same way. If you do a 301 redirect you will be fine.

I own about 25.

Changed original domain name from wscr.com.au for SEO purposes. These days its just 301 and will probably just stay that way.

As far as my SEO goes, I have no plans to use any other domains for that purpose. Will just stick with backlink building for my primary site, which is now as SEO-optimised as I can get it (read: as optimised as I know how to get it)

Also own a bunch of related ones and some non-related that were bought just for investment purposes that I plan to develop and flip - when I get the time! :)

I own uhdtv-guide.com and uhdtv-reviews.com and a bunch of others with similar thinking behind them (ie tech that will be big in a few years time)

And one more that I have PCRT parked on. That one will stay as is. Its not registered with any search engines and is just for running the database. I specifically did not want to put it near my main site just for ease of installation and maintenance. Its actually laptoprepairsadelaide.com.au, but I dont see a huge influx of people likely to want to buy it from me so it will do fine just for pcrt.

I have had this happen. They didn't like a tactic I was testing and I went from #25 to #989 for 30 days exactly. Of course, I fixed the problem right away and submitted a reevaluation.

But if they don't like what you are doing, your site disappears!

Domain name should be short and simple for visitors to remember. Some people say that, you should choose a domain name which contains some useful keywords in it. May be that's a factor for choosing a domain name, but a long or complex domain name is hard for visitor to remember.

I have done that before, but I don't think it work out well for me.

I've got lots of domian anmes however for my main company I have 2.

One is for printer material (business cards/flyers/yellow pages) and the like this is my company name domian this is a 301 to my main domain which is an exact match keyword domain for my most popular search term that can attract potential customers.

The exact match domain name ranks much better in google, it goes something like this citycomputerrepair.co.uk you'll find that google ranks exact match domian names.

For example if I haf a potential customer searching for laptop repair having the word laptop repair in my domian name will give me a better SERP.

However the exact match domian obvoiusly doe snot convey all the services you do hence the need for the company domain name to.

Hope this helps :)

You would need to host it on another server, different than your main website, and change stuff (especially text) around in order to fool search engines.

I have 2 domains for my computer biz. My second domain was set up under a separate account with my web space provider so it has a different IP Address. I have no hyperlinks to my main site -- just an image of my main web site's domain name for visitors to type in, and my phone number. Both of these domains appear in web searches for "computer + repair + [my city name]" and so this increases my chances of drawing in business.

Pointing a bunch of domains to the same web page is useless. Search engines will only pick one domain. Actually it might severely HURT your search engine ranking.

The only people who encourage buying up lots of domains are domain registrars who make money off of you. Kind of like Jiffy Lube telling you that you need to change a perfectly good air filter and change your oil every 3,000 miles.

To get round this don't publish your 2nd domian name on anything electonic/online and just 301 it you don't need to set it up on a different IP or anything like tha tif you don't tell google about it :)
