Hi all, i have a customer who lost his dell win xp installation disc. however, the c drive contain a folder name i386. he asked me if i can create a cd out of that so he can keep for future reference. i said yes and i try to use nlite software to create a bootable cd. but nlite complained that a folder was missing. dont remember the folder name but i think it was components or something like that. i press cancel i still went ahead and create the cd. when the machine reboot it read the cd but when installation started it complained that some sys file was missing.

do anybody know how to make a bootable cd out of dell i386 folder without getting errors and that works properly??

Sell them an external drive and image it from the old drive. If you want to get fancy then modify the old image first so it only boots the restore partition which I assume it has.

correct, it looks like the folder is there to add components without the cd. but what about if i want to make an installation cd out of that i386 folder. how can i do it? i dont think they want to pay for external drive. all he wants is a installation cd out of the i386 folder if it is possible.

is this possible? how

It should have a recovery partition. If it doesn't then he's probably screwed. Just make him a copy of whatever version of Windows he's using and tell him to use his CDkey that is hopefully stuck on his PC somewhere.

sometimes I feel like I shouldn't help others out.

I belive I led the OP in the right direction and he just ignores.

at least he should post back to say if it worked.

Abe .

Don't feel bad Abe, he probably hasn't been back here since he posted that last reply. If you check his profile you can see his last activity was that reply post.

Keep up the helping!!
