I have ddrescue installed on a linux mint machine and have used it successfully a few times but in this occasion I get an error. I have googled and tried putting the full path before the img file and log file. I can access both my drive and the other drive fine. The error I get is

Code:
steven@pitrecovery ~/Documents/recovery $ ddrescue -d /dev/sdb test.img test.logfile
ddrescue: Can't open input file: Permission denied

Use "File Manager" to browse to the directory you want to save the image to. Once in the correct directory Click 'File' ----> 'Terminal' and then try your command again.

I used to get various errors the same or similar to you until I started using this method which is outlined in the fantastic tutorial by SilverLeaf in the resource sections of the site.

Edit: Should mention this is from parted magic cd.

Hmmm not that then. What version of Parted Magic are you using? When I started experimenting with ddrescue I was using the version that came Parted Magic that was included on the Hiren's Boot CD. I could never get it to work with out errors such as yours.

Using a version from August last, along with the eariler mentioned guide and it has worked flawlessly.

the parted magic is probably about 8 months out of date as I setup this computer with ddrescue. I know bot work as I have used them to image drives before. I can access the hard drive I am trying to image fine through linux gui
