I have a client who is printing PDF documents to a network printer. They are having an issue where some text is garbled when the document is printed. This issue appears to happen at random and without rhyme or reason. They have two network printers on the same switch, and it only seems to be happening with one (I'm going in this week to investigate more thoroughly.)
The issue started after I installed a temporary 5-port switch while I was waiting for their new 24-port switch to arrive (they were out of ports.) I set up the new 24-port switch and the issue persisted. This switch is for the PCs. I then checked the switch that the printers are plugged into. It was making a strange noise, and I unplugged it and plugged it back in. It never turned on again. Turns out the switch was dead and the power brick was outputting too much power (12v instead of 7.5v) I thought I found the issue and replaced this switch. However, the issue persists.
I'm thinking that possibly the switch sent power through the Cat5 cable and damaged the printer, but then why would it work just fine sometimes?
I'll try and get more details on the issue and report back. In the meantime, does anybody have any suggestions?
