last week in had a desktop in. He had filmed some footage from his drone. When playing 4k videos it was all distorted but the res was only 300x300 or there abouts. They say these videos where filmed in 4k and play fine on there new laptop. They also had some which where hd videos the correct resolution which played fine.

I tested the videos on my system and had the same results on a desktop and laptop. Non of the devices where 4k.

Would it be the fact the device was not 4k be the reason the videos where all distorted.

All drivers where up to date. Windows 7 and Windows 10.

Yeah, it sounds like the system would have to scale to work with the display, so I'd think it would be similar to showing a high resolution picture on a lower resolution screen. Depending on what software handling the playback, you may be able to pick a specific playback resolution that maintains the original aspect ratio (height x width). Have a look here:

Download the Combined Community Codec pack and open the video in the included Media Player Classic program included. Haven't found a video that this couldn't play properly.

4k is a set (like sitting) standard. Unless the camera that was mounted on the drone had 4k/GPS/GRO, then you will see distorted images all over the place. 4k does not work well with traditional motion rendering models...its just a video definition class. From there it depends on the camera, and capture software.
