Cool...but concerning...

I can see the potential in this as well as some serious downsides. Why not create job stealing robots? We have people out of work now...And to a more serious matter, what about when that thing gets hit with a power surge/etc. and goes haywire.

Even if it is programmed to "harm no human", there's no guarantee. But there's no stopping the powers at be. I just hope my 12 ga. can stop that thing if it comes across my lawn.

Of course, we might all be more accepting if they look like this...funny, they even gave it female...err...attributes.

They're certainly getting better and much more agile now but I wouldn't say concerning ........ yet.

Somehow, a robot that staggers about and walks like a drunk who's crapped his pants just doesn't seem very intimidating.

Can you imagine a service call where the computer says NO! to a reboot and walks away? (I'm not going to argue....)
Don't want to go to a service call with a Faraday cage, EMP disrupter and hydraulic oil.

Maybe with a solid slug...in the shotgun, else I'd want something with more mass coming out my barrel than a buncha small shot that would likely just bounce off a hard cover.

On second thought, they'll probably build them out of Kevlar, so a lot of good conventional firearms will do... I think I would invest in a bulldozer to run it over, like in the movie Christine...

I think it's probably stumbling around in the snow because of the low grip "shoes" that they equipped it with. The real scary part is unlike a drunk, when it falls or gets knocked down it doesn't black out like a drunk human would...it rights itself and keeps on coming.

I find stuff like this is awesome. Long way from being an existential threat though, note the QR codes on everything so it knows what it is looking at. Amazingly lifelike movement though when it's recovering its balance.

edit: I always wonder though why people seem to want to emulate humans. I find the one with the fake skin and hair the more "unnatural" thing that was bother me. If it looks like a robot that's fine. And further more why make it built in a human shape? I know an eight legged creepy crawler would look scarier but would be far more stable. Someone is making a robotic snake which looks pretty cool.

Very true. Still walks like it's crapped its pants though. I guess the bent knees and a slight crouch provide better balance and stability by lowering the centre of gravity. It would be good to see a system sophisticated enough to truly mimic the human stance and agility, even if that's not as good/efficient as walking like mechanical chimp. I'm sure it's only a matter of time though ...

Might have more luck with the garden hose :D

Job steeling robots don't look like this, they look like machining centers, CNC plasma cutters, robotic assembly arms, consumer assembled goods, etc. The whole job stealing thing is another debate though!

I know exactly where they are. I could, for a fee of course, arrange for a very special pizza party... LOL!!!

Seriously, I don't see them having much of an impact in our day to day life. The reality is that a lot of that research is being funded by the likes of DARPA for military applications. They have a long way to go until they can develop a power and delivery system that can even come close to how a human performs, even an old fogey like me. Until then they will have to be tethered to a power supply.

Oddly enough, the walking like a drunk, slipping, sliding, repeatedly catching itself and continuing on, is what made me think "Oh crap, these things are getting real". Performing so well over difficult and varied terrain is pretty impressive.

I was also completely struck by the very human way it went through the door at the beginning of the video, pushing it open with both hands and then holding it open with the trailing arm as it walked through, exactly like a person.

Small things I know, but much more impressive than the robot dog/donkey devices they've demo'd in the past.

I noticed that too, and especially at the end of the video when "it" exits the building. It holds the door open almost like a human would. And, notice how it swings its arms when it walks.
