^ I hear that. I've tried doing that stuff too. Practically give stuff away. Contest is to share/like, blah blah blah... not much comes from it.

If your area has local charity events, try donating something for the event. It can get your name out there, and some people at those events are quite loyal to the cause it's for and will give you their business for participating.

As an example...
There is a motorcycle poker run here every year that benefits military vets and the like. It's basically several hundred bikers in a group going to various stops along the route to get their poker card. At the end of the route, best hand wins.
There is also food and a gathering afterwards where they have a charity auction. Those that donate get recognition on a board listing (and mentioned in ads for the event) plus mentioned for the item during the auction.

We donated a laptop a couple times for the auction. Doesn't get a big return, but does show your support for the community and some people really appreciate that.

I've donated USB dongles, Mice and keyboard combo's (wireless and wired) Headphone/Microphone combo's, new printers, etc to local charity events.
Got absolutely nothing back.
Gave out hundreds of "discount certificates" to local clubs/pubs/hospitals/seniors homes etc.
Got one client that actually used the certificate.

I find it doesnt attract people in the right way. You want to try and access people who are ready to buy, not people who just want free stuff.
When I was doing residential work, I had an ad in the services section of the local weekly newspaper. It worked well because people only look in that section when they are ready to pay for services.

I never have done that kind of thing, I advertise in a little local book called Pocket Book. Has bought in heaps of work over the years, then word of mouth.

I've done probably 100 certificates to charities to use in fundraising auctions. Redemption rate has been less than 10% over the past 10 years. I love it!! The charity gets to raise money and I don't have to do anything whatsoever other than edit my auction template and email it over. I used to donate new computers but got ****** off when one that was worth over $500 retail sold for $65. Never again.

Any idea how much new business you generated from it? I mean in addition to the 10% of auction winners.

Not sure, My mindset in donating to these events is to try and give back to my community because this town is what made my business what it is. I feel like I have an obligation now that I am able to give back without hurting the business or my family's stability. If sales happen as a result its just a bonus.
