I wondered how people transport laptops and pcs to their workshop in the event it needs further remedial work? I'm in the uk and am looking at buying maybe some transport cardboard boxes. Any ideas or tips?

1 of the regular users on here posted about laptop sleeves from Deal Extreme. I picked up 2 of the 15" sleeves & 1 of the 13" sleeves. I've to pick up a 17" sleeve/bag as I get that sized laptop from time to time.

For desktops I just carry them. I've been tempted to pick up a Gear Grip LT harness for them though.

I bought an iLugger not too long ago for desktops and love it. My customers really appreciate the extra care as well. For laptops I use a generic 17 inch laptop case.

I put the computer under my arm, carry it to my car then from the car into my office. I repeat these steps in reverse when returning it ;)

I almost lost my cheerios on that one, lol.

I was thinking the same thing.

Those are great for lan parties or transporting a computer when it needs to carried a long distance but from the customers house to the driveway I would not even bother. I have had one for a few years and they are nice but its kind of cumbersome to install. Especially if you have to adjust it for a different size case.

Thanks for the replies. I did think that carrying laptops and desktops as-is is the obvious option but I'm thinking of being a bit more professional :p The customer 'knows' you will look after their computer if they see you putting it in a box or case. How do you store it in you car loose them? Or do you let them crash into each other when you have two or more? :p

Or simply do all the work onsite. No risk of damage to you or the computer and all time you spend touching it is billable! For laptop hardware that require bench repairs I use a large standard laptop case.

Plastic Bins

We use stackable plastic bins similar to this with foam inside for the laptops. We don't have anything for desktops, we just make sure that it is secured and not under direct sunlight.

I have a coupla big blankets in my boot to stop the crashing and bumping and scratching

For less than the price of a cup of coffee, I use the incredibly strong Big Blue Bag from Ikea.
I have three in my truck at all times and these things are virtually indestructible based on how I have used them (polypropylene).
They fold down small and I can fit two in my backpack if I know I am picking up machines.
I place a laptop in the bottom and wrap the material around it and it pads it well.

Very efficient and they are huge.

If you don't live near an Ikea there are people who sell these on ebay in lots.

I have a crate on wheels filled with of cuts of foam padding blocks from the factories (there waste my gain) I pack these around the PC/Laptop in my crate, stops any damage and shows the customer I care enough about their system to take care of it.

For laptops I use the boxes that replaced LCD panels come in. The are foam lined and the right size. I label the laptop, charger, disks and the top of the box with some easy-peel labels. Looks professional and impossible to mix things up.

For desktops I have a big plastictub and some blankets in the boot/trunk of my foot/elephant.
