Ok, I know Bryce made a recent post asking what Imaging software we all use, but I wanted to put out an actual comparison chart for all the popular options. Here are the most popular products people on here seem to use:
Norton Ghost, Acronis True Image, Clonezilla, DriveImage XML (Please feel free to add whatever other imaging software you use)
And finally, here are the categories of evaluation for each of the software products:
Cost: What does it cost?
License: What type of license does it have (annually recurring whereby you have to purchase every year, or indefinite use)
Useful Features: What useful features (in relation to disk management and imaging) does the software have, that sets it apart from the competition?
Format: Does it use a proprietary format to store images, or not?
Can it create an image offline?: Yes/No, and what method does it use (linux CD, BartPE CD, WinPE CD, etc.)
Can it restore an image offline?: Yes/No, and what method does it use (linux CD, BartPE CD, WinPE CD, etc.)
Can Images Be Explored for Files?: Yes/No, and by what method?
Speed: Tell us how long it generally takes to create a ~20 GB image file.
Size: Does the software use compression? Yes/No. If so, how well does it work?
Hardware Compatibility: Does the software recognize most drives, etc. you throw at it, through diff. interfaces (USB, SATA, PATA, etc.)?
Known Issues: Are there any known issues you have had with the product that would discourage other users from purchasing it?
Ability to Sucessfully Clone Bad Sectors and Restore a Working Image to a New Drive?: Yes/No
Can Backup To: Network/USB/etc. Please list.
PLEASE feel free to suggest any other categories you feel would be useful.
And please, if you have used any of these products, please contribute by filling in the details for that particular product. I think this chart will make an invaluable resource for all technicians here. Thanks again!
