Hi

Ususally i have no problem cloning a failing disk, but this has me stumped!

Windows 8 system, use Acronis to clone to new disk, all appears to work fine, BUT when i even install 1 windows update (can be any update) I get a 0xc00000001 BSOD

If I use system restore, I can take it back and its fine, but I cant install any updates?

Has anyone come across this?

I am going to try using Macrium to create image, (i have tried to create windows image, but that fails too)

Thankyou if anyone can help!

For some reason I am thinking you should scan the disk for errors before doing the clone. The SFC /scannow is a good idea too.

Sounds like some system file corruption getting worse when it is cloned.

if it is a failing drive and you have a clone, repair the clone and leave the original alone, repair install, chkdsk, sfc /scannow, one or all, should do the trick. :D

The OP said the drive was failing. The last thing you want to do is attempt to repair the filesystem on a failing drive. Get a sector level clone first (ddrescue is great for this purpose), then repair the clone, or a clone of the clone if your really concerned about the data.

Exactly. Frequently on failing drives, not all sectors can be read successfully. If the drive is damaged where critical system files are stored, then some things may not work when cloned. As mentioned, chkdsk and sfc on the clone is a good start here. A repair install may be necessary if those don't work.

Cheers all, the pc is a spare so I can try things, I can't do anything with original disk, so working with clone tried sfc, fixmbr, rebuild MBR etc still no good as soon a you apply a windows update it Bsod's. I can get it back with system restore but still no luck

Have taken a backup image using the built in windows tool, so will try that to tommmorow. If that doesn't work then guess ill have to go for reinstall

just a thought, some pc`s are going bsod, due to a windows update, win7 & win8, not all, just some oem brands are flipping out and others are not.

might want to uninstall last months updates, and start again one at a time to see when it blows a hose :D if your just fiddling for practice.
