Client wants data recovery...... for ammunition against husband!

Well just to update, I dropped the laptop by her place this morning. I did not hand over the files as I felt like it was better for her & me.

I'm not a detective and she wanted the files copied back to her hard drive which would of course overwritten everything I had recovered, making it harder for another tech qualified (in the courts eyes) to recover data in this case to do so.

She definitely has some issues and when I dropped the laptop off I almost got the 3rd degree.. she said she was shipping the laptop overnight to a friend who's friends with an FBI agent that would get the data off the computer -- Which is fine, but she said it in an intimidating way almost seeing what I'd say. Whatever..

Then she asked where her data was and I explained everything to her and told her that everything recovered was done to an external drive and the data had been deleted. She paused for a second and then stated that the data better not fall into the wrong hands or it would become a "federal case". I just looked away and thought 'are you serious?, get me out of here!"

Anyway, her computer is in the same state I picked it up in and all the data I recovered is gone so hopefully that's the last I'll ever hear from her!!!

I was wondering what was the outcome of this. You picked up her machine, did all the data retrival only to delete it and return the machine back to her without the data? OK-

Anything that is verbal doesn't exist. Take the job. Why not? I know of NO repair place that has something STANDARD on the invoice that says "I certify that the computer that I am bringing in for repair belongs to me or I am authorized to have the work done." There's no way you could be liable unless they could prove that you knew that you were assisting them in breaking the law. So maybe if this party EMAILED you, describing something illegal that they wanted to do, THEN you might be held liable. Otherwise there is no proof.

User needs to reset his OS account. His name is John but the account name is Stacie. uhmmm I wouldn't do it.

Not unusual. I have husbands and wives, who live under the same roof, bringing their computers in for repair. If the user name doesn't match their name I don't care. I just do my job. I am not a cop. I don't snoop around people's computers looking to "bust" them for having something illegal on their computer either.
