Car Magnet Left Paint Damage

I had a Car Magnet on my wife's car to advertise the business. It has probably been on there for 3 months straight. I took it off yesterday to wash her car, and noticed discoloration where the magnet was.

It looks like water spots, but I have tried washing it, and using goo gone on it, but it's not working. It doesn't appear to be a residue, I think it may have done something to the paint.

Has anybody else had this experience with car magnets? Any luck getting it off? I'm looking at some serious time on the couch for this one.

Thanks.

I've always used magnets to put bumper stickers on, as i dont like them being permenant, and yes they will discolor underneath. Especially bad during the summer, but year round. Its the natural fading of the vehicle due to the sun not happening under the magnet. 3 months seems a little quick, but oh well.

I stuck one on my broken down truck once and a year later went to take it off and it peeled clear coat off. It had began to bond with the truck. I figure another year and it would have bonded completely and been like it was painted on. =)

It's pretty well known that they can cause paint problems.

The instructions for fitting them normally advise you to clean the car thoroughly and to wax it before applying them, in order to get a layer of clean wax between the magnet and paint. if you don't do that then you're asking for problems. Even if you do, the paint will fade differently over time.

T-Cut would the obvious choice now I think. Remember that normal T-Cut should not be used with metallic paint as it can seriously mess it up.

One of my door magnets has discoloured the door. It's like a wash mark or wavy tide mark, the other door is ok. The problem door wash resprayed last year by one of these mobile units(can't remember the name). It was done by the leasing company before I bought it off them.
