I have a computer with a few bad caps. It fails a memory test using memtest86 with 2 errors. The samsung hard drive passes all test using samsung and sea gates hdd checkers but the hard drive reports smart errors. Can those smart errors be caused by the bad caps/memory errors.

The short answer is no. The SMART data is logged by the Hard drive and is independent of the system.

What SMART errors are there?

Your short answer is no, but if you are doing a sector scan read/verify I could see phony errors popping up. SMART would not be effected by this.

Not sure if you will find this helpful, but boot up a live Ubuntu CD or USB, and run DiskAnalyzer. In the upper left click the Ubuntu logo icon, when that opens click the middle icon on the bottom and search drive. run a short test and read the SMART errors. That will tell you in detail how many sectors SMART thinks are bad and why.

I can cause corruption of a hard drive, if it doesnt move the file or save it properly.

If it corrupts a file, it might try to read that sector over and over...not sure if that can damage it or not..
