Buying laptop ac adapters from ebay: yes or no?

Whenever a client needs an AC adapter for a laptop, I always find a new one (cheap) on eBay. Usually, I don't think about it, and the client is satisfied with the price. But is it a good decision to buy a cheap AC adapter to replace an original adapter?

In a case like that, I will typically read through his feedbacks. I look for overall satisfaction, and I also look through to see other who've purchased the same item I am looking at. The biggest thing to remember is that what you are buying is 3rd party and not OEM, and sometimes those things can be hit or miss... and while I don't discount the fact that many of those items are significantly cheaper, you need to keep in mind that you're not just selling the item but your credibility. With all that being said, IMO most of the ones you'd buy are nearly as good as OEM :)

The units that are specifically sold for a certain model have very weak molded plugs and fail often.

The universals are hit and miss. There are certain models that will have say a 10% failure rate of any given lot. But, if you are buying them cheaply enough it does not matter because you can simply refund the customer with another one. This model is generally better than the others.

The ones with the row of green leds across the top have a high failure rate and I don't recommend them. They tend to get extremely hot due to an internal short that develops either right away or within a month or two. Universals are always the best way to go except in cases where it's a high power laptop requiring a high power adapter which are generally unavailable as universals.

I don't work on many laptops, but whenever it comes up I prefer to buy the OEM model. I typically go for higher quality parts though. For what they're paying in labor it's stupid to try and save a few bucks on a part that's likely to fail faster than the original. It can suck for laptop adapters because some of them are so expensive.

You could always give the customer an option.
