Buying computers in Bulk (off lease)

I was going to put this in with the thread about concerns with selling used computers, but I figured I was going off topic. So I thought I would create a new thread.

We are selling on average 5-10 computers each weekend (90% desktops). But everyone is screaming for laptops. We are mainly getting our computers from recycling centers. We normally buy the desktops for pennies on the dollar but none of our suppliers ever have laptops. (and a lot of what we get is junk but we buy so cheap it still comes out good in the end)

I would like to be able to buy laptops that have come off lease. We are starting to sell more computers than we have time to build so paying a little more to get stuff off lease (where more percentage of them already work) would be fine. But I know we could probably sell twice as many laptops as we do desktops.

So how are you guys finding places to buy computers off lease?

My experience has been the same as yours. I think mostly because laptops don't have the same usable life span as a desktop, they are about useless by the time the come off lease.

I always find good deals on ebay, and tiger direct.

I sell a lot of IBM thinkpads, and misc Dell Laptops. I normally set the price at $350.

I am glad that you are able to sell for the price, provided a new one is about that much nowadays.

yeah, a cheap one. Any decent laptop is $550 and up, unless your talking about minis.

I sell them like hot cakes.

D610 for $275? You could buy it from a shop for under $200. How would you be able to sell an old laptop for the price?

I honestly haven't looked into their stuff, but I found them when I was looking for a deal on a new server.

Another option is revonate.com. They are in my area and they refurbish all of the Acer brands. Might be something to look into.

I used to work for Dell doing large scale roll-outs at corp's and school's. I think all of the computers were shipped back to Dell (or a contractor who works on them to erase the HD's) where they are then sold off in bulk.

I'd contact Dell.

I wonder if the businesses or schools could be contacted directly about purchasing the laptops from them at the end of their lease period. As long as they aren't taking a loss on the systems I'd guess that they would be willing to sell them close to the buyout price at the end of the lease term.

This is more like I'm talking about. I know it's possible because one of the companies I use to work for pay someone to take their old computers away. I contacted my old manager to see if I could take them. I told him I would do it for free. He said that they had to make sure they went to a place that would destroy the hard drives. I said that they could keep the hard drives.

I think he is ****** at me because he ask me to come back to work for him. I told him I would for $XX,XXX He offered me about 8K less than what I asked for, so I turned him down. I still have a buddy that works there and I'm trying to see if he could get them. I told him I would pay him for what ever he could get me. We were both told by our manger when we worked there that old ram and stuff like that we could just take because he had to pay someone to take it. Dude won't even tell me the company that takes the stuff.

They are doing a new roll out and will be disposing of hundreds of Dell Latitude D series. I would love to get those in bulk. Or thinkpads for that mater. I'm wanting to buy them by the pallet.

If we come across some business clients that want some very cheap, basic machines, we can usually find some off-lease Dell latitudes straight from Dell for roughly $200 a piece. Surprisingly, most are in pristine shape and 95% of the time they have no hard drives issues. The most that we'll see wrong with them are yellowing LCD's. Nothing major.

It's kind of funny though, Dell will usually just rip off the service tag of these systems, but last time they ripped it off and wrote "Service Tag 1234567" on all the laptops in thick Sharpie. :p

This is probably who Dell ships the computers to after they are off lease as I remember being told that they were sent somewhere in Georgia. Thanks for the info!

This is actually not a bad suggestion. I would recommend networking (socially) with your local business clients and schools. I know a guy that works for a school district and he has to pay to get rid of perfectly good working computers. If you get to know people well enough you can take opportunities such as these to make good relationships and extra money to improve your bottom line. :D

This is what I was trying to do. Like I said I use to work for a corporation that pays for someone to pick up their off lease computers. He won't sell them to me cause he is ****** that I won't work for him again. I just don't know how to find out about other companies that do this. Or who they pay to take them. I would be happy to deal with the company they dial with.

I'm going to check out that US Micro. It's only 4 hours from where I'm at. Not to bad.
