I have a Plex server and rip my movies so I can have it all in one place. I recently picked up a 4K movie and found that my drive doesn't support w/o flashing a different firmware to my drive. I tried and now my drive won't read any CD, DVD, or Blu-Ray so anyone here have any insight to how I might fix my drive and at least return it to original working order. I really hate to buy a new drive or harvest the one from my other PC but I probably will if I can't get the firmware on one of these that will enable 4K ripping.

Firmware flashes gone wrong for such things will usually mean you would need to pull the BIOS/Firmware chip and flash it manually. Prob not worth the effort, tools and time as opposed to a replacement drive - unless you already have all that is needed to do that.

Worth asking. Not sure about replacing the drive I would probably opt for one that has the needed firmware which are not cheap. I might just harvest the WH16NS40 on my other PC and let that one run w/o optical drive. Don’t think I will attempt to flash it until I have another backup or something.

I think my other PC is about to become discless and that way I can continue ripping any non 4K content and at some point pick up a pre-flashed likely USB based drive for my 4K ripping needs and general occasional need for drive on discless systems.

I got most of my initial information from their boards but couldn't find that article which is basically what I was looking for after it initially seemed to have been bricked.
