ok here is the deal. I had 120gb drive that failed on P4 2GHZ 1GB harddrive It was partition C & D. When I hooked the drive to another computer and clicked on the C drive it wanted to format it. So I use Data recovery software to pull all my data off. I brought a WD 500gb drive and reinstall XP. I partition the drive when I was installing XP. The system was running fine for 3 days but then i received Boot failure system halt. I tried to reinstall XP but it wouldn't work. I hooked the drive up to another PC as a secondary and i couldn't access the C drive at all. It look like the drive was corrupted. So i brought another WD 500gb drive and did the same thing. Partition the drive while installing XP. Guess what, did it again. Boot failure system halt. I dont know what the problem is. What can it be

P4 2GHZ... pull all my data... I brought a WD 500gb... So i brought another WD 500gb drive off
You've invested the money for 2 x 500Gb hard disk drives on a P4 system? Have you considered the possibility that the mainboard on such an old system might well be failing and causing logical corruption to the hard disk image? If the original 120Gb disk wasn't identified as being faulty, why replace it with even one, let alone two replacement hard drives?

What is Technibble? Technibble is a resource for computer technicians who are looking to start their own computer business or improve their existing one.

I don't wish to sound harsh, but if you're considering computer repair as a business proposition you first need to view your own systems as a commerical entity. Your own systems are the best place to learn if you're not yet confident in your diagnostic skills.

I agree, I would definitely not be buying another drive, i'd at least have one spare, if I was going to test if it was the drive or not... but I would of been looking at the Bios (is it up to date) cabling, board health, partition size, jumper settings for that board and size/model of HDD.

yeah maybe BIOS settings, could be bad cabling, motherboard failing, RAM maybe?

Or maybe some weird LBA/ECHS weird overlay issues?

I'm thinking BIOS settings also, especially if you're saying the same thing is happening with different drives. I was also thinking it could be the CMOS battery too. Just another thought.
