John Goodenough, the Fermi award winner who identified the lithium cobalt oxide material that forms the cathode used in today’s Li-ion batteries, teamed up with Maria Helena Braga to develop a battery that uses solid glass as an electrolyte.

Finally people might be able to feel safe using a samsung note in the future!. Can't wait for this technology to become standard.

The amateur scientist in me follows these and many other "safer / higher capacity / quicker charging" li-ion battery news stories, and there are many. We don't see these because the problems include getting market acceptance and a wide appeal. For instance I've been running PowerGenix NiZn AA batteries for years, but they still haven't caught on here in NA. Would be great to see more options.
