Hi, I need to move a 300gb time machine folder to an external drive and the Mac goes black with the dreaded pinwheel after several minutes, what do you recommend for copying large files?

Remove the drive and transfer from source to target.

There is no software that will make file copies faster, all you can do is strap the drives onto the fastest bus they can handle and let it rip.

Delete and recreate. It's a backup. If the Mac is working correctly then it's just quicker to rebuild the TM backup on a proper external hard drive as it should have been.

Ok, there are some questions:

You say the TM Backup is on the Mac, as in a separate partition or second HDD?

What model Mac is this?

What are you trying to accomplish?

I've had some good results with teracopy and really big files. They do a version for Macs, too.
