Believe it or not, I recovered the data

When they dropped this victim of a housefire off I told them not to hold their breath because I did not want to give them false hope after they had already lost just about every thing they own including all their printed pictures. Ended up recovering about 20GB of data and about 18GB of that was pictures.

Congrats! Out of curiosity, what brand was the HDD?

And, does that desk have black drawers, 3 smaller ones on the left side, and 1 large and 1 small on the right side, and have chrome legs? Because, the top of it looks EXACTLY like the one I have been using.

Can't remember the HDD brand, I'll look tomorrow and post. Actually it's sitting on a regular folding table. One we hooked up with about ten miles of cable and a Cybex switch.

Can I use that picture for my next blog and why people should back up? It's incredible....really it is. I will give your business back link credit if you like.

:D

Good job btw!!!!

That is seriously impressive!! Great job.

When I was employed as a tech we used Drivesavers once. Funny thing it all came back on a bunch of CD's. Couldn't read a darn one of 'em. Had to send everything back. Second time it worked. We got everything. Even the temps, off the HD. As I recall expensive though. Something like 500.00 for less than a gig and that was a few years ago.

Heh. I have the blackened hard drive from that machine's twin hanging on a wall in the customer area under a sign that asks "Have you backed up today?" We got the data also. Makes a great advertisement and conversation piece. :)

That is pretty awesome that you were able to recover that. The one laptop I have encountered like that in person we were not able to recover data from. And by we I mean the company we ship it to for data recovery. How long did it take to recover the info?

The HD was a Western Digital. I think what saved it was that these have a metal casing that the HD slips into. As the data was coming off it was clicking its little heart out but it was pulling the data so I just let it click away. It was the little HD that could. The customer has been through some rough times with some other stuff before this so I didn't harp on them about backing up, I just told them when they get settled with a new computer to let me know and I would help them get a backup plan in place.

Actually, you should not. This picture proves that you can skip backups, burn the laptop in a fire, and still be able to recover the data. This is a perfect rationale not to back up.
