Remote into clients computer a Dell laptop win 7 home 32bit Google Chrome will not load. It appears in taskbar but never appears on screen. This is what I’ve done so far.

· Ran Malwarebytes and removed some malware.

· Ran Chrome Cleanup Tool - didn't do anything that i could see.

· Followed step by step YouTube video that showed how fixing permissons cures the lauching problem.

· Uninstall and install Chrome – did this many times.

· Last uninstall followed YouTube video that deletes Google Folders and Registry Keys before reinstalling.

Now I can’t even install Chrome I get “egads installation failed Error code 0x0004002”.

· Ran Tweaking All in One repair tool to fix permissions and anything broken by malware and me.

· Ran D7II to repair windows post malware removal and did some windows maintenance.

· Created new admin profile and tried to install Chrome there.

Still getting “egads installation failed Error code 0x0004002”

Help! I’m out of ideas.

Take a look at the SMART log for that drive using Crystal Disk Info, just for the halibut.

What A/V are you running aside from MBAM?

Is Intel Rapid Storage Technology installed?

Run Checkdisk.

Try installing in Safe Mode.

Run SFC /scannow from an elevated command prompt.

Ok I forgot to mention I did do a system restore and yes I did use offline installer and the one at ninite.com/ also. Question to Fremont why would the Intel Rapid Storage make the Chrome Browser to a deep six? I really didn't want to run SFC, if I reset all the files I may as well redo the system and that is going to be my last resort. Laptop is using Security Essentials as AV and I only ran Malwarebytes because it only found a few search engines as PUPS.

Searching a bit, I see some success by restarting system in safe mode and installing as administrator from there, have you tried that yet?

Ok I'm offline with client now. I had control of their computer all day and they wanted to check their email and stuff - the computer works just fine Chrome is the only thing that doesn't work. Well anyway I'm going to do that Safe Mode deal when I remote in tomorrow. I told client they could have the computer back for the evening. I'll get back with you all. Thanks for the tips

Intel Rapid Storage Technology can do very strange/unpredictable things to Windows. Generally, unless you're running RAID or a small SSD cache drive, you don't need it.

Crystal Disk Info will tell you if the drive is reallocating or if there are sectors pending reallocation, the latter will give you really weird results because Windows is trying to write to a sector that it can't read back from.

SFC is going to make sure that all the files/versions that it thinks should be there are there, just in case a virus slipped in a bogus copy and MBAM removed that, leaving a missing file or something that's the wrong version. At least that's my understanding of SFC's function.

When you try your Safe Mode install, perhaps best to use Slater's link to the offline installer.

You might also consider pulling Security Essentials off the system an installing Avira or Kaspersky for a final sweep of the system, as MSE isn't that strong in the detection department and MBAM covers a different area than AV's do.

With how much time it sounds like you are spending on this, I would just wipe and reload. Also I would have run a full memory and hard drive test long ago.

Sorry been off line and haven't been able to respond. thanks for all the tips. To answer some of the responses the computer is working fine. I don't think it is the hard drive, memory, or windows installer. I have loaded Firefox and Vivaldi with no problems. All other applications work fine, this is a Chrome issue. Yes Mikerog, I am spending to much time on this. I think this morning I'm going to talk client into using IE, Firefox, or any other browser of their choice - they're all free and no sense in paying me to fix Chrome on an old laptop.
Once again thanks for all the help I can always count on Technibble Forums to see the forest despite the trees.
Thanks

Even when you reinstall chrome it leaves the user profile behind to be used in case you reinstall chrome. Could the profile possibly be damaged?

Here's the path:

C:\Users\%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data

Rename User Data to User Data.old

Reinstall chrome and it will auto create a new profile.

Ah never mind ... sounds like some of your initial troubleshooting should have covered this. I'll leave it there for others in the future though.

Came to an agreement with client to settle with IE and Firefox. I would only charge for the Malware removal and be done with it. Everyone is happy. Who needs chrome - although it is still rolling around in my head of what the real answer to the problem was.

For future reference, might look at a program like iobit uninstaller, I think that one is free, others do a similar thing as well, but basically a program that will run the uninstall utility, then hunt down any folders and registry entries related to whatever program you are trying to work with, chrome in this case. I've had to use things like that before to get out of jams similar to this.

To my fellow Buckeye. I will check it out, always like to check out new software. Using Revo Pro Uninstaller now and like it a lot but it seems that someone is always coming up with something better and the tools we use are always a changing.
