bare metal restores

bare metal restore is the same as a bootable image restore. Most of the better known backup apps will do this. Both free as well as paid.

I thought "bare metal" implies that the hardware for the data being restored can be different than the original hardware.

I couldn't restore a system image made with Clonezilla, to another computer could I?

Actually you probably could without much trouble if it was *nix. But, I believe what you're after is called hardware independent imaging/restoration.

My definition includes all image restores, dissimilar hardware or same machine. For dissimilar hardware the list is much smaller. Nothing that is free, that I am aware of, will move to different hardware. Macrium, Paragon, Easus all have that available in certain versions. I'm sure there are others.
