I listened to the podcast and as much as I enjoy Matt and always have some of the things said during the podcast I believe are a bit inaccurate.
"Linkedin for bosses Facebook for employees"
Survey May 2011 - 1,200 microbusinesses, 65% of them are currently using social media. 49% Facebook, 7% LinkedIn…“micro-businesses” that we’re talking about here — those with 10 or fewer employees.
Those employees you are talking about are the ones that have issues and like any issue if you have a problem you tell the boss…And more than likely they might even mention they know someone that can fix it "because" they saw you on Facebook…
I think it's a misconception to think that "owners" are not on Facebook just like their employees….Being a business that actually have business clients I can attest to "owners" being on Facebook….and for the most part they don't even use Linkedin…And if they do they don't use it near as much as Facebook.
"don't mess around with Facebook…."
Dec 2012 - With 750 million unique monthly visitors, Facebook ranks far and away as the most popular social networking site, according to an eBizMBA ranking in December.
But don’t forget about Twitter, with 250 million visitors, and LinkedIn with 110 million.
750 Million and that was Dec 2012….Monster numbers that mean something….The more people you get in front of, talk to, social media with etc….the more your business will grow. To throw out there "don't mess with Facebook" is insane....
We have a "locally owned TOWN NAME" where I live and surrounding communites on Facebook....Thousands of people belong to those pages and "any" business can post on them weekly...That gets your name out there with doing little to nothing. Does it mean someone is going to pick up the phone and call you that second...nope sure does not...But, you are in their mind.
"don't get much money off it.."
Pretty general statement and as Matt said "everyone is different"….I would ask "are you putting as much marketing effort into it as you are LinkedIn?"…I would venture to say the answer is no. If the massive groups you are part of on Linkedin could not of brought in enough business for your computer business then what exactly is so great about it.
Same can be said for "Craigslist" when people say "I don't make money off it"...Well I do...I have made thousands of Craigslist and so can others. Way too general of a "don't make money off it" concept which does not cover the masses...
"Facebook fan page no money"
Again all depends on marketing. Is someone going to call you and say "hey just saw you on Facebook…..probably not…But, if they see you posting on different pages i.e. Local pages in your community then they incur a problem in their mind they might think "hey I remember seeing this person on Facebook"…No different than any other social media if you don't use it properly then it won't work.
We did a custom Facebook page for "computer repair OUR TOWN" comes up first page of Google searches…Do we get work off it…sure do….Do we let competitors put a post on it…sure don't….
Look at it another way. Everyone works hard to get their website ranked well in the search engines….Google is by far the highest ranking in usage by people worldwide….So are you going to concentrate on getting ranked on Google or "Lycos"? I am going to shoot for Google because that is where I know people go…..
Same concept with Social Media….I am going where people are….And if you are providing any type of social media packages to customers/businesses then you need to know what is best for "them"…and "them" only….Linkedin has it's place, but for the normal business i.e. joe the plumber, nancy the carpet business, hank the car lot, etc….Linkedin might get them to meet some people but not bring in traffic or money….They need to be ranked in the search engines and found on Facebook, and have their name out there as much as possible in front of the masses.
I have been providing "marketing" for local businesses for years...That includes websites, seo, social media, local portals and more....I would never tell a business we are only going to deal with this or that and we don't do something else. If that is the case then why not just find someone that can actually provide what they want as a package....
