Hello all,

Please see update towards the bottom of this post

we regret to inform you that latest virus database 271.1.1/3292 (432/3292) released 12:53 AM CET requested computer restart with inability to start the system again with error:

STOP: c0000135 The program can't start because %hs is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

We have immediately downgraded published failing version to fully functional 271.1.1/3291 (432/3291).

If you have unfortunately met mentioned error, please follow these steps:

If is possible to boot into Safe Mode, then run System Restore before the night AVG update and re-install AVG.

If is not possible to boot computer at all, please follow this How-To.

Or use AVG Rescue CD -> menu Utilities -> Midnight Commander -> navigate to /mnt/sda1/program files/ (or program files (x86)) and rename by F6 AVG folder to other name (for example AVG_old).

Windows 7 Startup Repair
Described at this Microsoft website - follow section "To open the System Recovery Options menu on your computer"

Then start your system again and re-install AVG.

Please accept our apologies for any inconveniences caused by this situation.

Thank you

Update from Kodl:
This issue is limited to 64-bit systems only, currently it looks like not all 64-bit systems though, we are investigating. The updated has been pulled from our servers and if you have not been affected by this issue, it is OK to update normally.

We will release some tool to help in fixing the systems affected by this bug. Also, a few users here in the forum have posted excellent descriptions of fixes that do not require full use of the Rescue CD.
In short, during boot, boot into the command mode (pressing F8) and rename/remove the AVG program folder, then boot normally. After this, you can run the repair installation of AVG.
See for example an excellent description here http://forums.avg.com/ww-en/avg-free-forum?sec=thread&act=show&id=133009#post_133009 by Pulse21

Again, please, accept our apologies and stay tuned for a more detailed description and a fix

Man I wish I would have seen this yesterday. Spent awhile trying to figure out what was going on with this computer - they did not want to reinstall. They told me the last thing they did was update AVG (initially though fake AV but it was not)- so on a whim I renamed the program files folder and was able to boot and reload. Good amount of wasted time on this one.

Yeah, and the damage this update caused is pretty substantial. If the user restarted after the update their computer is basically in a non repairable state to the majority of people who aren't comfortable using a bootable drive. Was this the case with the paid version of AVG as well as free?

This updates is already contained for the most part but it seems like everyone is making this like a big deal when it really is not. If a system has this problem boot to windows disc, select repair, do a system restore back to just before the update was installed, reboot and your good to go.

the automatic startup repair will not work by system restore does the job just fine

I don't feel this should be taken lightly.

Some of us recommend AVG and this reflects on us. Its called TEST TEST & TEST this type of problems should have been pinpointed before the release. When I find problems like this with ligament programs I get quite mad. I can not charge a customer for a program I recommended to them that then has this type of problem.

I have seen this happen before and luckily I keep track of program recommendations I give to customers and if I didn't recommend the program I charge charge charge. This is the problem that things like this cause. AVG has cost a lot of users pocket books, and probably cost some their information as well. If they take the product to a BIG BOX STORE it can cost hundreds because they say "Well need a new HDD, new memory, new this and new that". I doubt that AVG will take the cost's on, therefor the customer eats it.

I still think AVG has the best anti virus software around. I just feel that they need to step up and offer to pay the repair cost for customers. If I brake the computer of a customer then I MUST FIX IT OR BE SUED they should have the same responsibility on their hands. This is what liability insurance is for.

EDIT: Just because its an easy fix does not mean everyone can just fix it them selves.

LOL I do like Avira the problem is I can show good example of why AVG is better then the alternatives (you know the crap two I am talking about). The local college (MCC) uses it and that is a way I can show them the power of AVG. I personally have had Avira cause problems on a computer once. I cant tell you the number of software that have seen crash computers.

A little off subject but this is why I never update my own computer right away and keep auto updates off. I have found waiting a few days for the upgrades/updates keeps problems from cropping up. The problem is I cant tell my customers to do this because they DON'T manually update, no matter how much I tell them.

Back to Avira I always tell customers who have it on there systems that they are well protected. It is a very good program and has good reseller support. I have used it when AVG hasn't found virus that AVG couldn't find and vice versa.

Sorry all I have been posting long winded responses recently its just getting back into the business.

+1, I'm kind of running out of free antiviruses; AVG's bloated and kills pcs, avira can only update once a day and if you miss it that's it, avast.... I don't trust avast

Well then who do you like? I mean the big boys (NorTonOfCrap, McMyFeet) are virus and not protection. I hate finding the big two on computers. I also try to push the purchased AVG and Avast (helps my pocket book).

Norton is virtually on every laptop I visit :( They've got the marketing right because most of the people who got a 90 day trial renewed it

If this was a common occurance it would be one thing but it happend, they fixed it fairly fast. Its seems like its a difficult fix but its not. Of course most people cant fix a problem like this. That is EXACTLY why we are in business. Just because a programmer made a mistake and no one caught it before it got pushed out we should knock an entire program

Eset is said to be the best but i've seen an install on a fresh install of Windows crash the pc. Avira, Avast, Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro, BitDefender, Kaspersky, CA, all have had this very problem at one point of time or another.

when the problem can be fixed without researching how its pretty much a non-issue and what i mean by that is it broke, we fix, we move on.

this year alone i have sold approx. $10,000 worth of AVG to clients including businesses. although I have had issues pop up from time to time, they are fairly easy to fix, AVG tech support is fairly fast and accurate with fixes. when I sold norton (years ago) nothing but problems with little to no reseller support (very inaccurate). CA was useless for my clients. Trend Micro would work fine with one version then the next wouldnt work at all. McAfee (never sold it myself) just sucks maybe intel can fix'em.

I personally like AVG because its a good (not great but good) detection rate, its simple to use, it does its job and stays out of the way when its doing it. If that changes too much then I'll move on, who knows McAfee might be good by then

If you want to know what works..

If you truly want to know which anti virus software works then you should be checking http://www.av-comparatives.org/. They have independent testing every 3 months and compile a list of findings from a controlled enviroment.

The answer is... you can't really say. Just like AMD and Intel, the virus protection companies do their best to stay at the top. Things change. In October, I believe Avast was #5 Overall (Out of like 20) and 1st place in speed, and in the newest report it came in it didn't do as well. Remember, none of the virus scanners work 100% of the time. Virus samples are missed by every single one of these scanners.

What I do, and what I recommend is to get a virus scanner that is consistent. So, I look at the av-comparatives tests and see that the most consistent, best performing AV scanners are: GData, Avira, and Avast. They all stay within the 99.3-99.8 percent detection range it seems. Others change drastically from the previous quarterly test. Not a good sign. Sometimes they work, and sometimes they don't (Poorly updated definitions).

I personally use Avast! Because I do not have risky browsing habits and my system is always properly maintained. Avast provides outstanding protection, free for home users, and has the FASTEST On-Demand real-time virus scanner.. which is what I want.

Moral of the story.. educate yourself... brand loyalty shall not apply to virus protection. When Avast! stops working well, time to dump it. Won't be the first and won't be the last.
