Apple has been fined $9 million by the Federal Court for telling some Australian iPad and iPhone owners they could not have devices fixed as they had been previously repaired by a third party.

The court action was started by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) after it received complaints about 'error 53', which disabled some Apple devices after an operating system update was downloaded.

My only complaint is that it's at least an order of magnitude too small.

Fining Apple $9 million would be like me getting a $76 parking fine.
The laws definitely need to change to deter behaviour like this from "mega corporations."

Let's see Apple's quarterly revenue is in excess of $50 billion per the securities exchange commission. That's like $200 Billion annually.

let's say the average annual salary is maybe $50 thousand, and I am being generous. So Apple makes 4 Million times more than the average person.

Now let's say an average parking ticket is $76 (I doubt it is that high in the USA)... $76/50000 = 0.152%
9 million / 200 billion = 0.0045%

That works out to YOU getting a parking fine of $2.25, and they fight about it having a little tantrum kicking and screaming to the courts over it, too! YUP That will teach them!

Now, if you took your parking fine and multiplied that fine 33.77 times it would hurt them as much as a parking ticket hurts you or I. It would be in line with something that would actually teach them!

Realistically, speaking, $304 million would be a fair fine!

Wouldn't it be a great idea if the fines from these giant tech companies was given back to their customers.
Make the company give $500 discount vouchers to every customer registered on their books in that particular country.
That would have to hurt?

That would just lead to more suicides at the Foxconn plant...

$500 discount? So basically forcing people to buy back into the company that screwed them? Apple would probably make a ton of money on that deal actually. How many of their products cost more than $500? The customer would pay the difference.

Make it $500 in Samsung gift cards and that would really teach them.
