I need to add some RAM to a customer's R720. They currently have 64GB and I'd like to put in an additional 64. New parts from Crucial are about $1,000, but used parts from SS are $320, $400 with the 1-year warranty add-on. This server has about 18 month of life left, so the cost savings are pretty tempting. What would you do?

By the looks of it they've been in business for 15 years however here's a clause that says to me no no no

Extended in House Warranty:

Extended 1 Year in House warranty starts after the original warranty (30 days) and ends 1 year from the purchase date indicated on the invoice. In case of defects in the material Server supply will provide only >>>>>>>>1 time replacement<<<<<<<<. If we fail to replace the merchandise, we will refund the actual sell price of the merchandise. Warranty charge, Shipping charge and tax, if any, are not refundable. Server Supply reserves the right to decide whether it will replace the product or refund the amount.

I've used them once, got HP parts for some older proliant servers that needed a RAM upgrade. Parts are still in service today, product was shipped in an anti-static array. Used RAM is about the only used parts I'll consider, because RAM is all but indestructible if it's handled correctly.

PC3L - 12800R 11-12-E2 ECC 8GB RDIMM x 8

Existing Hynix part numbers HMT31GR7EFR4A-PB

Crucial part number CT8G3ERSLD8160B = $119 ea. from Crucial, $98.99 on Newegg.

I am cautious about mixing capacities, so I'm quoting 8 additional 8GB sticks to go with their existing 8 x 8GB sticks.

Fair warning, using 3rd party parts might void the server's warranty. Used parts from the MFG in question, off the supported list... not so much! :D

Not used them but I've used Server Monkey several times for RAM as well as SAS drives. Never a problem.

Valid point but a R720 is way beyond any OEM warranty, even extended.
