...and I used to like cracked.com

"Oh, that's an easy fix. Just download Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy, and run them. It'll be fixed with virtually no effort on your part."

I've had a 100 percent success rate using. And neither one charges you a goddamn penny. Just download them, install them and run them.

This guy's obviously never run into a simple rootkit or file association modifying malware. On another note, I don't trust anyone who recommends spybot; it was good best part of a decade ago, but not now.

The author apparently fixed one computer and now has all the answers. Some good points, but I haven't used spybot in about 3 years, and mbam + spybot would probably fix about 1% of the viruses I get in my shop.. Actually 0% because he doesn't even mention to run them in safe mode

My thoughts exactly. Zero Access anyone?

Oh god yes. I have just spent a week getting rid of a ZeroAccess infection. It was frustrating and the only reason i kept at it was "I NEVER FAIL GODDAMIT". No seriously though it should have been a clean reload economical wise but i was up for a challenge and didnt charge for the "extra" time on it, but I did fix it.

The article though while humourous and mildly informative, lost credibility at Spybot.

Or you could, you know, take it to a guy who will do the same exact thing, except charge you $200.

The thing is, there is nothing you can do on a computer that we haven't already seen a thousand times. We know people watch porn -- hell, three-fourths of all repairs I've ever made have been because of bad porn sites.

The truth is (aside from the oddball cases I just mentioned), almost everybody does exactly what you were doing. The reason repair guys have a job in the first place is because people continually mess up their computers by going to bad websites, downloading screen savers, opening spam emails, installing questionable games and using torrent sites without knowing how to spot the bad ****.

Lol This guy is great I want to hire him.

Aside from his virus removal garbage, I have to agree with most of the major points he makes in the rest of the article.

Talk about the blind leading the blind...

I personally do not see any benefit in the whole article. John Cheese (whom I have actually never heard of before) sounds like a complete noob when it comes to computers. Im sure Im not too far off base here.

They want you to put your day on hold, drive over to their house and click the four buttons required to fix the problem

How is putting my "day on hold" a bother? I do this for a living. Also, "Four clicks does not a computer fix". Cheese seems to think that viruses have never evolved since the introduction of them. I wounder how many times he has nuked and paved because of malware that hides your desktop or keeps your system from booting? I bet he will never say.

It's Going to Be Expensive as Hell

Not really. Its just that the places he frequents are probably ripping him off because they read his article(s).:D

Lets see, A lawyer has a computer infected. He earns 150 bucks an hour. He is not going to waste 2 hours removing it and repairing the damage (300 bucks worth of time) when he can pay someone to come over at his convienance and pay probably 120 bucks or whatever.

Cheese is the very reason I do not frequent sites that spew garbage into the minds of those not educated in some way of the subject at hand.

Cheese also tends to paint a poor picture of repair companies and/or techs as overly expensive, hating customers and too high and mighty "Elitists". That alone raises enough red flags in my mind to write him off completely!

Evidently Cheese has a serious problem with a very filthy mouth too. But, I cant just stop here Im affraid. So, I have jotted down some helpful "John Cheese tips" that also follow his line of reasoning:

1. Just put your garbage cans in your trunk and drive them to the garbage yard. This saves you money also. Its not that hard to just drive over anytime and dump in infront of their gates.

2. When finding an unexploded bomb just unscrew the cap and cut the wires.

3. When your sick, Just self medicate.

Ok, Thats my rant.

coffee:)

Often times I love it when my clients attempt to fix their own computers before calling me. My thought process is simple: try to fix it yourself. Them you'll probably realize it is more difficult that click 4 times and you're cured.

Besides, after they've gone in with ccleaner and mucked about in their registry and fouled the OS royally, they will be VERY appreciative of my services :-)

I have many tools in my garage. I own a car. I can change my oil. But to think that just because I own a tool then I should be able to do an engine rebuild is complete folly.

Well said and good advice.

Although my comment was pretty harsh on the author of the blog I still stand by it.

:)

I found this article very enlightening, especially the comments.
I have no problems if people try a malwarebytes or spybot scan, especially friends. If it works, great. When it doesn't, then they can call me. I have found malwarebytes alone is not very effective against the newer malware. Does anyone here still use spybot?

The more interesting thing to me is the comments. There seems to be a very low opinion of members of our trade. There seem to be a lot of us out there who are better at computer service than customer service. Something I need to remember.

Although I dont care about the info it is a little bit annoying how they call all pc techs a rip off pretty much and go on about dont pay etc.
