advertising on illegal stream (UK folks)

There is a certain someone who streams footy matches in the UK. His streams are fantastic quality, don't ask how I know. You can pay to have your website in the upper corner of the stream for the entire match.

My question is this: could the authorities use information from the advertiser to go after the streamer? There would have to be a payment trail since the streamer is accepting paypal. Honestly I don't know how this guy has evaded being caught.

He's charging £50 for the Chelsea v United match Sunday. Cheap advertising for you UK folks but what would you be opening yourself up to if you paid for it?

Forget the legalities for a moment. Would you want your billboard on a pirate ship? How about a fence for illegal goods? Drug dealer's car?

Seriously, you're asking this question in an open google'able forum?

Secondly, as with Loring.... Seriously, you're asking this question?

^that^

Remember - with any form of advertising, you will get the customers you aim for. Do you want to attract customers who aren't willing to pay for a different service? Do you think they won't try to nickel and dime you?

This is why I don't advertise on Craigslist - (while there are some 'proper' folks perusing it) I don't want to attract the people looking for the cheapest deal.

Pffft, I wouldn't sweat the "public forum" stuff unless he said he's done it. He's spitballing and someone would have to do some pretty specific googling to dig this up.

BUT... the other question I'd add is: Does advertising nationally/globally serve you any advantage? Would that money be better spent in local/targetted advertising?

I would say unless your in a global company, or aiming for a national audience, then it would be a complete waste of money.

That £50 would be far better spent doing some local advertising. Even on a adwords campaign.

Well, beyond the elephantine proportioned question of "why in the hell would you do this?" Is the fact that the reason it is cheap is that the customers you get from this will be too.

Why would you want the type of customer this ad will generate?

Ok, I read my op several times and realize I probably didn't use the best wording to get my point across. With that said, I think you have all misunderstood the reason for my post. Why not post it in a public forum? I've got nothing to hide and the streamer obviously has not been named nor do I know who the person is. The purpose of my question was not to seek advise on whether I should advertise but rather could this person be caught by the association of the advertiser. At this point, only the streamer and his friends know who he is. If xyz.com website appears in the stream, the authorities now have a name to go after. Xyz.com paid someone with paypal which can be forced to turn over the owner of the account.

It's general computer chit chat people! Nothing more.

Nevermind. I'm an idiot, and my apologies to the op.

PS: This is why one should refrain from posting on forums after spending several hours trying to troubleshoot a v-lan issue only to realize one forgot to tag the damn port on the switch.

Ohhh, I see what you're saying. If the authorities couldn't reach the streamer through other means, maybe they'd try to go through the advertiser to reach him, but wouldn't it seem likely that they would just try to shut him down as a first or main approach? Plus if the advertising comes through a third party, they may never find out who the streamer really is. I suppose it depends on the company he is encroaching on and how far they care to investigate beyond just shutting it down.

Folks, the OP is in Maryland and he is just speculating about a streamer in the UK...not looking to advertise with him.

Advertising on an illegal site? Why would you even contemplate this?
You could potentially damage your brand and if you advertise to cheap people, you're going to lose money.
Don't do it, you'll be losing your reputation as an ethical and responsible businessperson and you'll be flushing cash down the toilet at the same time!
Get some flyers printed up or print an advert in the local paper.
Replying to your original concern, it's only a civil offence in the UK to breach copyright laws (NOT a criminal one!), the association could only force PayPal to do anything with a court order which is going to cost them tens of thousands of pounds, vis a vis, it is very unlikely they would pursue you.
