I have a advent 9112 Laptop it is dead, i am trying to open it up to look at the motherboard, but i am having trouble opening it up, has anybody worked on the above Laptop please could you tell me how to get into it, all screws are out and want open, i am very good at opening Laptops but i am baffled by this one, cant even find a service manual for it, please help,

Done it now, there was a hidden screw, just a want question, this laptop come it because the her daughter put the laptop on the bed blocking the air vent and wont switch on, now i have stripped the computer down and have tested it and i am sure the motherboard or power supply is naff, can blocking the air vent do such a thing, i only ask because i am still learning and would be intresting to know. the ac adapter and battery are fine .

I dont work on Laptops your light years ahead of me. :) But I do know that the bedsheet kills laptops. (its classic) CPU VIDEO or MOBO itself. It cannot cool, plus the insulating effect of the bed, its fried.

Im sorry.

I always tell my customers not to place their laptops on soft surfaces just for this reason. I usually tell them to get something on which to place the laptop.

I thought the worse anyways, the laptop does try and start and cuts off, no fan, no post just dead. i am at the point were the motherboard is to blame and is naff, fixing laptops is not that hard, most laptops come apart the same way, i find it quick and simple taking a laptop now. but i seem to fix more laptops then desktops.

Oh yeah it will. Just one of those things that's difficult to prove it was actually the culprit unless you see/smell something smoked on the board or inside of the machine is full of lint, dust, hair etc..

Whenever you get an issue such as that one or perhaps someone telling you their laptop is running hot, the first question to the customer should be "are you using the machine on a hard flat surface?";)

On a side note: Its amazing the condition of some of the laptops I see. Its like people just do not care. I've always been gentle on my equipment maybe that's why I'm baffled by this. Then these people wonder why their machines break?

Same here. Anytime I get a dead laptop in the shop I smell the vents, if its smells like hot plastic I ask them if it's they use it lying on the bed or something like that. I tell them that it's bad and explain the whole venting process. But it doesn't matter, they keep doing it.

I cleaned one laptop twice in the past year, each time the fan was packed with a fine pink fuzz. Customer has a pink plush rug in the den where the kids sit on the floor and play with the laptop so the machine sucks it in.

I had a look to see how much a new motherboard would be and can't get them anywhere, i think there part of currys/dixons. Trying to sell my customer a new computer now.
