46 page privacy policy for a TV?

Thing I hated the most about this article is the phrase below.

“Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party.” Got that? Don’t say personal or sensitive stuff in front of the TV."


So basically if I have a ton of friends over for a big sports game, I have to tell them to behave and not get overly emotional because my TV might report us. Man I miss the old days.

Are you Freaking serious!!? That is beyond freaking. I been wanting a 46" LED 120HZ for awhile but I settled for the 46" LCD my dad gave me. He bought a Smart TV.

Can't believe they would add crap like this.

Makes me even happier that my flat screen is not a smart TV. I have a netgear neo tv box that I have added to it in case I want those functions, but I can always turn that off or unplug power. What happens when someone hacks your TV or you get android viruses on your TV?

Thanks for posting this. We're in the market to replace a TV that has ghosted images (not supposed to happen) on the LCD panel. You just saved me some money by making me realize I don't need to interact with my TV...just let me watch NY Ranger games, Mr. Pickles and the Walking Dead.

If you want the smart tv type function, one thing I've thought of is this.

Basically an android computer on a stick. Consider it has google play on it. With this for example, I have dish network, but I have access to the dish anywhere app which allows me to stream TV from the hopper(dvr basically) to any android device. I could use something like this to watch my normal programming on, download netflix, hulu whatever. Games, web browsing etc. Want to take it out of state, just go wherever there's internet, plug in and you've got access to everything theoretically. Makes it nice, and it can be unplugged.

What a bunch of FUD. A more serious article might mention at least in passing the make and model. Is it just me? I mean, if you're terrified of your TV you probably shouldn't have bought one with a camera and microphone.

Do you think it's possible the author, who happens to be the "Counsel in the Liberty and National Security Program at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law" might just be stirring his own pot rather than "discovering" these scary things AFTER making his TV purchase?

And practically speaking, I never see people using their smart TVs as a web browser, checking email etc. anyway. They stream Netflix. Or the real adventuresome might also have Hulu.

That one was based on "a new report" from the Brennan Center for Justice. Wait a minute - where does he work? And I wonder who wrote that new report? You only get one guess.

The reality is that no one should expect any privacy when they choose (CHOOSE) to connect a device to the internet. Not saying it's right - but it's reality and no longer the least bit surprising.
