Is it possible to have a 4 virtual desktops going to 4 separate displays at once.
using four pci graphics cards. Possible?

Its for a retail shop display.

I've never seen it done with 4 cards, just one Matrox Quad head. Expensive card though. You'll need a program to manage the desktops. The standard windows multiple desktops won't do what you want AFAIK. That's all the experience I have though.

If a quad head card is out of your price range you could probably find two dual head cards for much cheaper. I haven't tried doing that but I'm very sure it can be done. How easy it is will of course depend on the virtualization software you're using. Are you running the Os's in parallel or are you running one as a host and running the others inside of it? I'm sure it'd be easy with vmware or virtualbox. If your mobo supports hardware virtualization you can try the free version of xen but the free version doesn't include much in the way of configuration utilities. Not a pretty or easy way to try to set up your virtual machines.

You can run the 4 displays with a crossfire or sli board and 2 pci express cards. Just don't run them in sli mode; you would only have one display if you did. As far as 4 virtual desktops/machines, you will need an ass load of memory or it will run like a snail. Are you just wanting to run 4 videos or something at once?
