I'm very inexperienced with fiber cabling but I'm trying to get some prices for a job that is connecting 2 points 1,350ft apart. I've looked at cable specs and it seems that duplex OM2 should be fine for 1Gbps. I'd ideally like to be able to push it to 10Gbps, but that might be pricey and none of the hardware currently supports it anyway (nice for future though!).

I found a place selling some cable by the ft (many sell spools of 1,000 ft & I don't want to splice, unless that is ok..) and it is $127 for the 1,350! Unfortunately it is almost $250 for shipping. Another is $170 for the length and $500 for shipping! Is this standard shipping rates for fiber optic or is something screwy going on here?

I'm planning on running conduit about 6-8" underground and don't know if standard riser cable is ok for this. I know it isn't what should really be used but budget is key here and the link is a luxury, not necessity.

Anyone have any suggestions on what to do here? Thanks!

Anyone know where to but by the ft instead of pre-cut lengths?

I use Lanshack for pre-terminated fiber. But this wont be $150, close to $1000 for the cable I would think. Do 10GB fiber for future proofing.

Fiber is expensive to work with. If you are inexperienced enough, the cost of equipment to splice and certify is going to scare you as much as a several hundred dollar spool of fiber. I would say just because there are youtube videos doesn't make you an instant expert when it comes to fiber.

Over the summer, I was onsite for construction for a large apartment complex for university students. Construction was behind by about 6 weeks, and there was a huge rush to interconnect the central hub to the other 12 buildings, with fiber, the longest run being something like 1200 meters. Well, somebody inexperienced (construction worker) was in charge of pulling the lines, damaging several short runs and damaging the longest run. It was a bad day for the property manager, but a good day for my company as we were subbed for this work as well.

If possible, get training in fiber. I sent one of my guys to the local community college when they had a class, and it certainly has helped us pick up more fiber specific jobs and sets us apart from our competitors in town here. Dont half-ass it, or you might regret it.

Yes obtaining pre-terminated fiber works well and I would recommend. A corning fiber terminating kit used to be around $800.

Absolutly. You can manualy splice the pre-terminated ends onto a roll. Even with the fusion splice laser kits it just takes practice. You need to leave spare lenght in case you fubar the preparing the cable to joint. ATC radar here has 2x 3.5km runs in 1km sections all manualy stripped and jointed.
